my friend has it, it can hold a huge bloatload of stuff. if he really packs it to its limit, it looks like an army knapsack. go for it.

Thanks, you mean the XL is the Targus?
That's what I've been hearing about this backpack. I do have quite a few books along with my laptop so yeah I welcome the space.
How long has your friend had it? Does it hold up overtime?

material is pretty good, he's had it for a year i think, daily uses to and from classes/dorm etc etc. it holds up, i was going to get one, but i can't justify the price. a $10 targus works well for me.

    Do you have a link?
Thanks a lot, sounds great to me. That's what I expected
It looks similar to the CityGear, is it just a naming game?
Looks really good, a little more expensive than the Targus though, but really promising otherwise. Now it makes my choice harder....

Thanks a lot for the inputs. Any more ideas?

I can assure you that the high sierra bag is better built. Look at what the backpack is made of --- the high sierra is made of 1680 denier ballistic nylon :) Couple that with the casePC sleeve, and you have a terrific system

I tried getting a picture like that, but I was not able to-- sucky camera :(
The ebags page has one picture with the outermost compartment of the bag open.

It actually has the same capacity and compartment oprganisation as that pic; it does not have that black thing holding the yellow book, and it does not have that secondlast compartment (hanging by threads); instead the second last compartment of the randolh is bigger and has internal plastic dividers.

Seems a hard choice ,the one wearetheborg has would last the longest because of the quality. Got the Targus TCG216US off amazon, going for a great price even after shipping then any other site I've looked at.

I loaded it with a lot of gear and books but haven't gotten the laptop yet. it's an early purchase when i saw the price. Its holding up great and can't wait to test it more when I receive the laptop.

If i had the money I would go for the Sierra backpack. It is made of better quality and would do better imho. Went with the Targus due to the size of the Asus W90vp. If the sierra can fit and you have the money I would definitely go with that one.

Thanks ahl395, but that Lowepro doesn't look as big as the other two.

Seems like we're down to the 3 now. Targus XL vs Targus CityGear vs High Sierra. I gotta make a choice, it's so hard.

Get the High Sierra only if your getting the casePC sleeve with it; a 17" laptop wont fit in the sleeve provided with the backpack

yeah, but will the laptop fit in the backpack?
    Also I found this one.
    http://www.ebags.com/high_sierra/hutch/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=127780
How is it compared to the Randolph? The specs show that it has more capacity.

    Thanks a lot.

The Dell M90 fits comfortably, and its a big laptop. I have given the dimensions of the laptop in the review, check that your 8710 is smaller. One of my pictures is M90 in casePC sleeve in backpack.

I prefer the randolph+casePC over the hutch as 1) CasePC sleeve provides all around padded protection, the hutch leaves the top part uncovered 2) Randolph has a hip belt, hutch does not and 3) Randolph uses better material (the 1680 denier ballistic polyester).

The randolph may seem marginally smaller, but since the laptop compartment is at the back, and has its own opening, it can fit bigger objects (eg the casePC sleeve).

The included padded insert is too small as I mentioned, so if you dont get the casepc sleeve, you will have to put the laptop in the backpack as is, with no protection/padding.

Apart from the padded insert, which is low quality, the rest is very high quality construction. Have not see better or even same construction in non-hiking backpacks.

    Ok
I went to the store and checked out the Targus CityGear, XL and Wenger IBex. All 3 are good but each lacks some certain things that I like. So for right now I think I'm leaning toward the High Sierra.

wearetheborg: Can you please take some pictures of all the compartments inside the high sierra? I bought my own sleeve and I don't know if I could put it inside the sleeve that comes with the backpack (I don't really need extra high, as the laptop with be inside another sleeve).

    Thank you.

Edit: I see what you meant, the width of the High Sierra sleeve doesn't take the laptop correct??
That gives me a second thought.

that really sucks, for a such a nice backpack like that.
I just bought my sleeve so I don't feel like spending money on another sleeve, plus buying a backpack that can't even fit my laptop gives me awkward feeling.

Thanks a lot wearetheborg, I'm gonna check the backpacks at the store one more time before making the final decision.

Thanks everybody else for giving suggestions.

I have the Targus 17" CityGear Laptop Backpack Model TCG216US and use it to hold my 17" P-7811 FX, a Zalman notebook cooler, mouse, Canon XSi DSLR and three lenses, Canon HG10 Camcorder, mini PC tool kit, BlueTooth GPS tracker, and all the cords, extensions, and such......weighs a ton but still have room to spare.

The quality is also outstanding, not a single complaint about it.

Yeah, I wished I had more money to spend :p
I checked that out at the store, really good quality but doesn't have as many compartments as the others.
Good to hear. I checked that one out at the store side by side with the XL and Wenger Ibex and really liked it. I'm bringing my laptop tomorrow to test each of them then I will come up with a decision.

Thanks a lot for your input.

Any recommendations for a backpack that will hold a 18.4" widescreen laptop, that also isnt ridiculously expensive ? Let's say up to £50 (~$70/$75) and is available in UK. At the moment i have a jeep backpack that was suited for 15.4 and 17 inchers (got it for my Toshiba Satelite, which i dont have anumore) and as much as the 18.4" monster gets inside this one as well, the laptop has just too little space in it, its too tight for the 18.4".

    Thanks in advance
