I've got a Maxtor 1TB drive - its a Seagate inside.
Works great for me
(Onlything that did happen was my Power Supply failed - Seagate supplied a new one under warranty)
-
Does exactly as I expected, will probably get an identical one, should I fill this one. -
On another note:
In Germany I was told that only 3 companies nowadays manufacture harddrives - Western Digital and Seagate are two. -
i heard seagates and WD often physically dies =/
and i read reviews for both and pretty much it died on them =/
Lacie is the only 1 that has positive reviews mostly -
Any HDD can die.
Edit:
Here is a list of manufacturers - it may be outdated though:
http://www.interfacebus.com/Reference_Hard_Drive.html
Edit 2:
I tend not to use Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_disk_drive - but they list 5 manufacturers. -

The reality is, all hard drives fail. I would take the liberty of saying that the failure rates are all likely pretty similar, and when people say "__________ makes the most reliable hard drives," they're basing it on their own experiences. For example, I can say "Seagate makes the most reliable hard drives," since for me, no Seagate drive has failed for me to date. But would that be accurate? No.
Also, in general, the people who get faulty products would be more inclined to post their horror stories online. But in reality, for most products, the failure rate is rather low.
Personally, I would advise just going with the cheapest external hard drive that meets your needs. I have an external Cavalry 1TB eSATA/USB2.0 drive (Hitachi inside) that I got for $80, and it hasn't failed me yet. -
I also, like the fact that I can rely on it to work for me....
Personal choice I guess.
It seems you want to go with the Lacie, and it that's what you want..then go for it!I'm sure it will work out just fine for you..Has nice *reviews*.

=/ so there is no way I can buy a EHD that can last for 3+ years without breaking/failing/dies?
-
The thing I've had problems with EHD's is the interface bridges dying on me. You should worry about that more than the drive itself. -
An HDD can last you 6 years - or it can dies after 1month.
The HDD in our very first laptop lasted about 6 years in constant use and to the best of my knowledge would still be useable.
The laptop even travelled on the backseat of a car while turned on.
But it could have broken after a few months - a year, or two or three.
If you need data security - get two HDDs and keep two files.
The chance of 2 HDDs failing is slim - although it has happened to my former maths teacher in Germany (electronics fried) - he managed to swap out the electronics I think and recover his data. -
You can't predict the future..or what is going to happen with a EHD.
Treat it right, take care of it...and most likely you won't have any problems!

I was gonna suggest WD, but it seems that you are going with Lacie,
-I've owned a 250 GB WD for three years and just bought a 1 TB WD the other day.
