I have a 2.5" external HDD in an enclosure which I connect to my laptop via USB. It's powered by the USB.

Sometimes while it's been plugged in for a while, it will randomly disconnect. I will hear that sound from Windows when USB devices disconnect, and the HDD will make this continuous ticking sound. Let me explain...if anyone else uses an external 2.5" HDD you might know what I mean. Whenever you disconnect the USB cable, the HDD makes this kind of 'powering down' sound. This is the sound I'm talking about....but it makes the sound like every 1.5 seconds.

Apart from this though, the HDD works fine. Wondering if anyone might know what the cause of this could be.

Tried with different USB ports? With another USB cable, with another external housing?

    cheers ...

are you using a (good) usb cable?

i once had a (short) USB cable extension for my USB hub that sucked... had that problem of random disconnecting... once i removed the cable, everything works properly...

Yeah I think it might be the USB cable. I got a new cable and things seem to be fine atm
