I've been lookin around for an enclosure for my old laptop drive but I think they all have a Y cable. My macbook only has 2 usb ports and I'd rather not give up both of them. If I plug it into a 4 port adapter will that work? When I use my ipod with that it transfers really slow and I assume that has something to do with power? What about if I just plugged one of the usb plugs in?

Even if it comes with a Y cable, it may not always be necessary to plug both of them in to work. One of the plugs is just for power and no data at all. All my laptops are fine just plugging one of the 2 USB heads in.

With that said, I've used various single head USB mini to USB plugs and some will work, some won't unless I use a DC 5V to USB plug along with it.

My 2 boxes don't have Y cables, they are My Passport (Essential and Elite) from Western Digital.
