Just got a external USB 3.0 drive setup using samsung 470

sequential/random benchmarks are identical regardless of compressible data.

    So exFAT or NTFS ~~?

Forget exFAT on "a external USB 3.0 drive"

exFAT was developed by M.S. for use with SD card flash memory devices.

Using exFAT for any other use than that (specifically a general external drive) is only asking for trouble down the road, and the road won't be very long before you run into the trouble.

NTFS or FAT32 are OK, with nod going to NTFS.
