I would personally go for the Asus MX239H. I love the design and the AH-IPS will look beautiful. Also 5ms response time should be fine for everything except online FPS. 80 million smart contrast ratio should be awesome too!

Depends if you want a faster response time for FPS but that IPS will look awesome for watching films on.

One quick note, cant you use hdmi for the xbox? it would surely improve the quality of the image. In this case the first screen has 2 hdmi inputs.

Although I'm a big fan of quick response/high refresh rate screens, I'd only do that if I had a powerful enough computer to really push 120fps consistently. Since you're using a laptop and xbox, the benefits of that kind of screen won't be present. I'd go for the IPS unless you're planning some major hardware upgrades.

I ended up deciding on neither lol. I ended up just replacing the VX248H. I really did like the IPS display but I did a comparison by outputting a duplicate display on both the 60Hz 24" and AH-IPS 27". Both looked great and viewing angles were amazing. Whites look better on IPS but the blacks were definitely better on the TN. In the end, I'd rather save the money. I really don't want the silver frameless chassis of the MX series and it's 23", I desperately wanted 24". Surprisingly, the speakers on the VX24H are really good (relatively speaking) while the VX279Q suck miserably.

The perfect display for me would have at least 2 HDMI and D-Sub (DVI and/or DisplayPort is nice too) as well as a thin and light matte black chassis, and a 24" AH-IPS panel. This way I'd feel comfortable later adding another for dual monitor and like the appearance and size of the monitor. Unfortunately, Asus loves the glossy finish and their only 24" IPS option is 16:10 which I personally don't want.

Thanks though everyone. Maybe Asus will soon release a 24" IPS option (and hopefully within my return window) but I doubt it.

Just want to remind everyone that GTG time and total response time are different concepts.

With that said, the VX248H should have near-perfect total response time.

Ok and what about the IPS monitors?
