Thread name discribes it all, if you use a 5.1 microphone headset, which one is your fav? Which ones are you using? If you could go all out and price wasnt a limit which one would you buy? Opinions? Thoughts on them? Links to reviews?

Most surround headsets these days are 7.1 rather than 5.1. I generally prefer a solid stereo headset to any gimmicky surround headset, but if it's gotta be surround, check out the Razer Megalodon (my personal recommendation), the Plantronics GameCom 777 (second choice, great for low budgets), and the Logitech G35 (never used it myself, but people seem to like it).

Usually it's virtual surround through some sort of software wizardry. There are some that actually cram multiple drivers into each earcup though.

It depends on the model, for most of them Ive seen they have 4 speakers per ear. 1 is bass, the front speaker is the center, the middle speaker is either the front left/right speaker, and 1 in the back for rear left/right speaker. Creating a virtual sound field with the speaker, Only problem with buying something like this is that the speakers are smaller and tend to be cheaper, hense why im looking for recommendations.

Only problem with stereo headphones I have is that they dont create a 3d field, so if someone was walking up behind you to knife you , you wouldnt know. I currently have a 5.1 home theater surround sound, but other noises in my house continuely break my focus or the illusion of being in the game. Im looking for a decent to top quality 5.1 headphones to keep out all other noises while keeping me immersed aswell as giving me an edge in gaming. :)

Thanks for the recommendations mastershroom, ive seen the g35 but not any of the others. And I realize now most are 7.1 but for headphones or even gaming 5.1 is all anyone really needs. The only reason 7.1 was created to my understanding is for creating a bigger 3d sound stage for hometheater. In traditional 5.1 hom theaters only the person sitting in the middle gets the full benifit of all the speakers, sitting slightly off gives you more sound in one ear than the other unbalancing the audio experience (partially why I want a pair, if I like em, im going to get a splitter so everyone when they come over will have personal 5.1 audio). 7.1 corrects the embalance by adding 2 more channels of audio in the back, not much supports it though on the movies or game side, only a few blu rays have it and I think resistance fall of man is the only game that supports it the last time I checked.

Either way if its just you in the headphones 5.1 is all thats necessary.

Apparently though, virtual 7.1 is better than actual real 5.1, in headphones.

The likes of the Megalodon and the G35 create 7.1 through their drivers, even though they only have 2 speakers it works as well as the real deal.

You're most likely going to get a better experience out of 7.1 as compared to 5.1. Plus, all of the virtual 7.1 headphones have their own built in sound card providing better sound quality than most sound cards except full-on gaming cards.

If it's GOT to be real 5.1 then I'd check out the Roccat Kave headphones. Real 5.1 with 3 speakers in each earcup. They require a 5.1 sound card on your computer though.

If there's no limit, I'd check out the Psyko 5.1 headset. They're real 5.1, and they are very expensive, but supposedly the best gaming headset money can buy. (Good thing too, given the very high price tag)

Personally though I'd recommend the Logitech G35 or Razer Megalodon. Both have recieved absoltely fantastic reviews, neither require a sound card, and both will satisfy your surround sound needs for gaming.

Do you think they create good soundfields? I dont want to drop money on headphones if its not going to give me a great 3d field, I hate being knifed from behind :p

You're correct. Unless you live in the bizarro world, the laws of physics hasn't changed. You still need 5.1 actual speakers to get true 5.1 surround sound. However, as mentioned, the "effect" is technological, not actual.
Only you can determine that. Some people think it's pretty convincing, while others find the effect annoying. You really need to sit down and listen for a while (the effect can grow (or decay :() on you but it may take a while. That's the only way to know for sure.

Its alot of money to risk getting "fake" surround sound. Im used to actually 5.1 home theater were it is real surround sound, I guess ill have to hit up a few stores for demos or something.
One thing internet stores will never take away , walking into stores and trying out the products.

That's exactly what you have to do. Find a store that will let you try before you buy. The important thing is to not allow yourself to be rushed. Making a determination over a new or untried technology takes time.

In fact, it may take a few trips if that what it take to keep from wearing out your welcome.

As a consolation, I usually have something already in mind I want to buy (CDs, connectors, etc.), and then use that opportunity to test out the new product. That way, the sales people don't get too upset with you if you spend the afternoon listing to a dozens of headphone/speakers etc.

Nevertheless, if they try to rush you, find another store. As you might suspect, I rarely make a bad purchase.

Same here , I bought a 52 inch tv a couple years ago and took my time picking it out, spent a good 6 months solid going to the store and back, and really researched it. As for the headphones, im hoping my buddy at futureshop and set me up with some demos. The g35 I see alot on the net same with the psyko 5.1 but heard some rough things about it. One thats caught my eye is the tritton but see mixed reviews on that one too. Thats why i came here see if anyone was using them or not :).

Got a pair of Roccat Kaves myself, one of the few headsets that is actual 5.1 not USB, problem is they take 4 hookups plus a USB for power. They do actual do what they say on the tin though and work perfectly for 5.1. Mic is supposed to be excellent but never used it myself.
