    hi,
i decided to buy a speaker for my xps m1330 laptop. i've bought the soundcard Creative X-Fi Xtreme Audio expresscard for notebook. i like listening to music (not so much of nowadays music trend with excessive boom-boom..but generally i listen to all kind of music, even classic and soundtracks sometimes) and watching movies, dvds on my laptop.
i already have 2.1 speaker from Creative (cheap one) and considering a reasonable priced 5.1 speaker from Logitech: X-540...Z-5450 and Z-5500 would be too expensive for me..
but Logitech Z-2300 seems the best (from Cnet's Review..but some complains that it's not for music lovers)..
i'm leaning more for 5.1 because i already have experienced 2.1 (cheap of course)..Logitech X-540 not too expensive but i'm afraid it doesn't deliver what it suppose to.. Logitech Z-2300 looks good but maybe for gamers not for general music listening...any comments?

    edit:i'm not a gamer btw...

Yea, I was going to recommend the Z-5300 since you said the Z-5500 is too expensive. They really do sound great. Personally, I'm yet to try the Z-2300 speakers, so I don't have an opinion on them.

I have the Z2200, similar to the newer Z2300, with the exception of having slightly bigger satellite drivers. The music does not feel bass heavy if you manipulate the equalizer to your tastes. I also listen to a wide variety of music and I found that the quality is outstanding. The Z2300's have been under a lot of fire about their midrange being too weak, but i have heard them at a friend's place, and once again after turning the bass down and tweaking with an equalizer i found it to be just fine. IMO, the decision to go with 5.1 system should do with space. In order to truly appreciate a 5.1 system, you need the room to install, and use it. So, if you have a big room, go for it. But otherwise, the Z2300s are just fine for all but the harshest of audio critics. .

If you're not a bass fan then Logitech really isn't for you. How much are you looking to spend?

i went through this a couple days ago shopping for a 2.1

the best 2.1 setup is klipsch promedia 2.1
the only thing is supposedly its "short-lived" though it has the best sound.
personally ended up buying a budget logitech x-230...

really depends on your budget though

Ah, do it right the first time. Lupin really seemed to like the Acoustic Energy Aego M's when he heard them a few days ago. They're $200, which is what, about 150 euro? As much as I like my Klipsch Promedia 2.1 and Edirol MA-15D, I'd get those if I were to buy in that price range today.

If you're more into music than movies, and aren't all crazy about bass, I strongly suggest you listen to Logitecs without listening first. You just can't cut down the bass without killing the midrange.

Logitech's are horrible at music reproduction. If you're a music lover, I'd skip Logitechs right away... they're designed more for gaming needs.

For music reproduction, I'd say the Altec Lansing MX5021 or Klipsch Promedia 2.1 sets if you're looking for low priced 2.1 sets (about $150USD for either of them). For a 5.1 set, I'd look into the Promedia Ultra 5.1, which is a bit more pricey. For a more expensive 2.1 set, get Swans M200 (about $200 USD) bookshelf speakers, hook them up to a basic amplifier that has a mini-jack output, buy a cheap subwoofer ($100 USD or so), and hook that system up to your computer.

I'm a music lover and love my z-2300s. You can get them for about 100-110 dollars which is a very good price. I listen to all types of music and the z-2300s sound great to me, but yes for music they are not outstanding. For gaming and movies there is no other 2.1 for that price that is better, but overall a great buy.

You know, I owned the Swan M200 for a long time (still use them at work), and the muddy midrange really started to get to me. I've found the MA-15D to have a lot cleaner sound, and they're a lot more versatile without a receiver. They have a ton of inputs, and a subwoofer out. But either, with a subwoofer anyway, would really push the OP's budget.
