Hello:
The little gold piece of metal inside the tip of my Dell Inspiron laptop broke off.
Is it ok to run the laptop without it?
What is the purpose of that small little piece of metal?

My bad. I don't mean inside the laptop.
I mean the one inside the end of the charging cord.

It is inside the end of the round tip of the plug. The thing you stick into the computer. -
Isn't that supposed to be the thing that delivers the power?
Might be the grounding wire though. Is the laptop still on warranty? -
I would buy a new charger to be on the safe side. If it still charges then Mobius is probably right and that is most likely the grounding wire. If thats the case, you could risk short circuiting something and breaking something more important.
Looks like you can find a new charger pretty cheap.
