    Hello,

I own the Lenovo X61s 12' laptop and looking for a shock-proof bag. I've had a look at the Samsonite V37, however it seems quite large: it's for 15'4, when my laptop is only 12. Please note that it has a memory foam or something which is very useful in preventing shock to a laptop:

    http://samsonite.ru/goods/goods_366.html

    So, please let me know:

    1. Is there something better than this one? My budget is about $200 for a bag. As cheap as possible of course.

    2. Is it OK to use 12' laptop with this 15'6 case?
    3. What is the best shock-proof bag with a memory foam or similar stuff for the Lenovo X61s?

    Thanks a lot.

The 12" is going to rattle around your 15.6 bag, not a good idea.

Are you looking for a sling/messenger or backpack?

And where are you buying from? Russia?

Yeah, it helps to know what kind of bag you want.

    Everyday?

    Business setting?

    Camping?

    Thanks for your replies.

Yeah, I'm buying from Russia. I would like definitely not a backpack. Pretty much the same bag as on the picture I posted above - a classic business case for everyday use. I don't need any bells&whistles, I just want a bag to be functional and shock-proof.

The Higher Ground Shuttle might be an option, but you might find it too casual.

The LowePro Transit Briefcase may also have the same issue.

The Belkin Flythru or Larchmont may also be considered.

Case Logic's Slimline Laptop Case and 13" Slimline Laptop Case could also be options.

Everki's Enhance Laptop Messenger Bag can also be considered.

There's also the Booq Vyper M or Booq Taipan.

If you plan to travel by air a lot, the Belkin Flythru might be a good choice.

Most of these are more casual designs than the Samsonite you linked earlier, but also better suited for smaller laptops.

dtwn: thanks a bunch. I'll be looking at your links. Are all bags listed by you shock-absorbing? For instance, I was unable to find memory foam or similar stuff in those bags. And this is the first (and probably only) thing I liked Samsonite I posted above.

To be honest, I listed them by brands I remembered.

All of these bags have some form of shock absorbing, however, certain models would have less than the others, i.e. Higher Ground Shuttle.

You may wish to look at the Booq Vyper M and see if it would work for you.

I would suggest you also consider getting a sleeve which will enable you to do two things:

    1) Be able to use your X61s in a bigger bag without it being thrown too much around, due to the bigger footprint and foamy shell of a sleeve. If it does get thrown a bit around, the foam will definitely protect it.

    2) Use the sleeve without the bag, when you just need to bring your laptop somewhere quickly.

Just dug up an old thread where I described some of my old sleeves. I would recommend the Elecom Zeroshock which has excellent memory foam.

I have that same Thinkpad bag, along with a few others. The external design is nice, but internally it is much too big for an X61. It is too big for my X200 as well. However you can of course fill up the extra space with i.e. the power adapter and other things. But generally I don't like the internal design.

Having said all of this, The ThinkPads really don't need any protection unless you are worried about getting surface scratches. As you probably know the ThinkPads including the small X-series can take a lot of knocks.

Hmm, seems a smart solution, thanks. I think I'll order it.

Hmm, got stuck here. X61s dimensions are: 267x35.5x239 (cm). The sleeve dimensions are: 27.5 x 21.5 x 4. So, the sleeve is 2.5cm smaller than a laptop. Is it OK?

Well, I'm not that sure. I had my laptop (not Thinkpad) fall on the asphalt (in the bag, and it crackled). I also wouldn't like scratches to appear on the surface. BTW - ThinkPads have a special magnesium surface, doesn't it protect from scratches?

The dimensions you are referring to are for the X61s with the 8-cell battery. In that case, the Elecom Zeroshock sleeve I mentioned in the other thread will not fit. If you read it again you will see that I mentioned it would fit a X61 with a 4-cell battery perfectly. With the 8-cell battery I used to use a slightly bigger foamy sleeve which came with the X61.

ThinkPads are not invincible (but almost :)). Any notebook if dropped on the ground can chip off some plastic from the outer shell or get a surface crack - even if inside a bag, if the bag is very thin with no protective material. Especially if the point of impact is a more vulnerable place like a corner. But compared to most laptops on the market ThinkPads are some of the toughest and most durable laptops out there.

The magnesium frame you are referring to does not cover the entire laptop. Regardless, the surface however is not magnesium, but plastic and rubber like coating on the lid. The surface scratches I am referring to are usually very light streaks and the coating generally does a good job of protecting and hidding these. But then again to be 100% scratch free without a foamy sleeve, you would need Sapphire glass on the surface ;)

Here is a very good case that I own, and have bought one in a larger size as well for my new laptop because it's very good.

It is memory foam, and has a front pouch that can carry a power adapter, and the pouch also has memory foam.

    12" Classic Slim Pocket Case
    12" Nylon Slim Pocket Case

Thanks a lot. Anyone could point me to pictures of Thinkpad Ultra portable case's internal design? Thanks.
