I've been looking around and while I like the Targus backpacks, I was wondering if there are backpacks out there with a padded compartment for a 15.4" laptop yet wouldn't attract potential laptop thieves? I'll be using this backpack for school so I'll need a nice amount of room for maybe 2 textbooks and my other stuff and sometimes my laptop as well and of course, it should be comfortable and durable. Any brands I should look out for that aren't associated with laptops? Thanks!
P.S. I just noticed a typo on the topic. If a mod could fix that, thanks.

I have an Eddie Bauer bag and I love it. I originally got it for camping and then realized it was outfitted for a laptop, so come college time I was pretty happy.

Check out www.spireusa.com I'm buying the Torq XL on the 18th. These guys make nothing but quality products..If you are a hiker, or on the move all the time, try em out..You won't regret it.

I think it was about $60 at the time? I can't be sure. All I know is I needed a pack for a camping trip and accidentally got a laptop bag and it's the greatest backpack ever--very comfy with weight. I've taken it camping/biking/on the plane/through freshman year of college/etc.
A quick google image search actually has it as the first result: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v295/pLasmeh/backpack/100_0643.jpg
Here's Eddie Bauer's current lineup of laptop bags-- nothing extremely similar unfortunately, but perhaps you'll find something better:

This doesn't look bad.
A while back I just needed something quick and I picked up a bag from Office Max I think....no..it was Staples.
Casual Gear is the name and the type is Olympia or something....it looked kid like at first then I became used to it. I peeled off the little casual gear emblem off the front and now it looks alright.
IT looks like a regular pack, has 2 side pouches for bottles that surprisingly drop nothing, I can jump, kick and scream, and I never do, so it's all good...the bag has lasted for about 1 1/2 years, no screwy stuck or rogue zippers that fly off track.
It could hold a 15" and a few books easy...I usually just have a few notebooks(paper) and the laptop inside...it came with a really nice zip up sleeve, padded, with it...and has a strap setup inside if you need it but I never use it.there is a little divider on the inside for holding the bag up against the midsection of the bag.and it actually works....I'm just surprised with it, I thought it was going to fall apart quick..I think I picked up the bag for 30$..it came with a cheep USB mouse, and something else I have never used...I can carry a large pile of cords in the front if I need, and the pouches, for pens, pencils, CD's, USB drives...whatever...in the front hold everything in surprisingly...it has a little hole through the side for an Ipod or whatever, but I never use it...I've never liked running my headphones cord through the bag and having my Ipod playing in the bag anyway where I can't reach it, so never use it, it's dark blue, black and Grey...doesn't look too kiddy, and has a really nice shoulder setup for length and great padding along the back....it's ok to walk with it for a while on...it stays cool too, doesn't get you warm. THe bag doesn't ahve allot of loose ends like some bags...no droopy cords everywhere.....or long super extended shoulder straps.
I like it because nobody can tell I have a laptop in the bag. It looks like a regular pack, when I pull it out people are suprised I don't have anything in there other then a book ior maybe a can of beans, but like I said that front pouch is cavernous not that you could tell from the outside. I can fit everything I need in it plus, and it doesn't look like I'm about to climb the Andes.
It's a good pack.
Looks something Like this.

there is allot of good packs out there, I never did look around before.
You should be able to find something decent for about 20 30$ the real nice ones, North Face, whatever, look to be about 50$ some are on sale around that price.
The Olympia bag is pretty subtle, even when I'm wearing it it's like it's not there and it has a really nice thick strap handle as well. -
I personally like the Targus Groove (Rv600); 19.99 USD at Best Buy

I like to use my normal shoulder back , but it has a sponge in the bottom

Some of the Swissgear laptop backpacks have enough color that they look like normal backpacks (and have plenty of pockets). They are also relatively light for their size.
Or maybe something like this Samsonite bag?

The bag has a padded laptop sleeve & lightweight (it's actually around 1lb):

This bag also has a padded laptop sleeve and from what I remember, it's very thick and it's kind of heavy at 3lbs, but it's very spacious!

I second the Swisgear backpack. Holds 4 textbooks plus laptop, ipod, phone, and other junk.
-
Have you thought about a messenger bag + sleeve combo?
-
Generally, the Targus logo itself does the screaming.
-
Ogio make great, great golf bags and I think i'm gonna give the metro a try. Its an awsome looking bag as well.
-
i just bought a swissgear synergy and havent really used it yet, but its coooooooooooool (and not in the way that would want people to steal a laptop).
-
i have a targus bag that doesnt look very obvious, except for the logo
is there anyway to remove it or effectively hide it? -
-
oh wow i cant believe i didnt think of that...
theres still the zippers too... ****it, lol
btw this is the backpack im talking about:

A NorthFace Surge looks like a normal bag but has a nice pocket in the back that all 15.4" screens should fit as long as you don't have an extended battery sticking out the back. It's very roomy in the book section.

I have the Targus Citygear one. It's on the big side but otherwise a solid backpack. Actually nevermind it is really big. I'm a pretty big dude. 6 foot 185, and people said it looked really big on me so you be the judge.
It really screams I have a laptop, which the op didn't want. Ended up switching back to my basic jansport in the end
A laptop backpack that doesn't scream I have a laptop
