Just tested this with my M1730 with suprising results. I recently purchased a stand-alone USB powered 80MM fan by Thermaltake. Placed it on the side of the lappy where the vid cards are located, it dropped vid card temp while gaming nearly 10C. Seriously, I was running Crysis and the temps were hitting 76C/78C, Now, with this little fan there, I'm hitting 68/71C. Not too bad for just a fan. Of course, I raised the back end to improve airflow (a deck of cards under each foot), but it seems to be working.

Here's a good link for it:

Check it if you are having cooling issues.

sorry I posted before I finished my thought.

I was wondering how well it would work. It looks handy for putting airflow many places you would like but I don't know if it's a better solution than some of the smaller laptop coolers that lift and supply additional airflow at the same time.

I do exactly the same thing, except I used a PSU fan and rigged a USB cable to it, then I got one of those transformers that plugs into the mains and allows you to change the output voltage bettween 1.5-12V and rigged a female usb port to it from and 3 yr old pc, so I can run it of my lappy, or 12V DC for insane cooling :D

All recycled, used parts, didnt cost me a thing, but I did cut myself when stripping the wires

This looks like a cheap alternative for those who need extra cooling for their notebooks. I would personally get a cooler if my notebook really needed the extra thermal management. This might be a solution for gamers.
