I've got a Toshiba laptop, that post DC port repair has a completely inop touch pad. While sad, it's not a total heart breaker because I was planning to turn this into an HTPC anyway, this just moved up my time line. The reason I'm here good people of NBR is I'm trying to figure out the best way to connect from the HDMI out on my laptop, to the VGA 15pin in on my TV and also transfer audio. Unfortunately I no longer have any available HDMI ports left on the TV, that would've made life so much easier. I've found several HDMI to VGA connectors on Amazon. However most of them have very disgruntled reviews because VGA can't transfer to HDMI, an analog signal can not become a digital signal without a converter box. Now my question is if I'm going from digital to analog will that work, since I want it to be HDMI out to VGA in? Or would I just be better served to connect the VGA out on the laptop to the VGA in on my tv? Tentative searching seems to indicate that as long as the laptop and the TV both support 1080 the VGA cord should transfer it. Is this correct? Mostly I just need advice on the cheapest/least head-ache inducing way to get this setup. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If this is in the wrong thread I apologize, this seemed like the most suitable spot.

This is a thing? Any advice on brand etc... ? I'd prefer to not have a big giant box thing which is why I'm curious as to whether the cord option is viable.

Awesome guys that looks perfect(the cord one specifically). I'll just plug my PS3 and 360 into that bad boy and it'll leave me a dedicated port for my laptop/HTPC.
I swear everyday I like this site more and more.
