Go for a pair of high end powered monitors with decent sized woofers.

It will give you clear crisp loud sounds with great fidelity and give you enough bass that you will be happy.

That or go for a amplifier and some bookshelf speakers and a powered sub (my setup)

it really depends on the route u want to go with your money. if your budget is $300-$500 then u have a very wide selection when it comes to some PC speakers.

    - high end 2.1 system
    - self powered monitors -- u can add a subwoofer later on
    - receiver + speaker setup

for my personal PC systems, i prefer a nice 2.1 system. just picked up the Corsair SP2500 2.1 system a few weeks ago and it's been very impressive.

You could pick up a set of KRK Rockit 6 G2's for 400 or less. They are very good active speakers, they completely destroy the Corsair SP2500's. But they are some what large monitors, so you will need room for them to fit.

You should be able to go the B&H's store in NYC and take a listen to these and other active monitors.

I do suggest getting a sub from craigslist or something cheap with the KRK 6's. Its not that they don't sound good, they just don't go much below 40hz(the 8's don't either, I have both).
