Personally I've been using the Alienware Orion backpack and it has been amazing so far. I'm unable to give you a fair review because this is my only backpack i have used for my Asus G73.

Though i have been tempted to replace my Orion Backpack with the Astro Scout backpack. It seems like I have only been experiencing this issue but the seems of the strap is beginning to tear and this is my second Orion, my first one was complete crap but fortunately Dell was able to replace it and my second one has been holding up better.

I suggest looking at both backpacks. The build issue could just reflect on my misfortune. Perhaps i received the bad batch.

If you will have to compare Alienware Orion backpack and the one you have used, which one will you recommend keeping the budget issue in mind as well.

Astro Scout is a very nice and big bag for the AlienWares.

The Scout is a nice backpack. So is the Orion. Another option is the Targus XL.

I can vouch for the Scout and Orion to be good backpacks. Scout has more space than the M17X Orion though. This is based on D900F and x7200 laptop sizes.

Dell XPS backpack. Fits my 17.3" Asus G73 perfectly. Tonnes of room, pockets, padding and comfortable to wear.

Well the Orion will save you there. I can't say much for the Scout but the Orion's weight distribution is amazing. My current bags weight is 8 KGs and i bring that to school with me everyday and the bag makes it feel like it doesn't even weight that much. I'll lift it up and it's damn heavy but as soon as i put it on my shoulders its really light.

Another thing is the bag is really good at keeping a low profile. My friend when he stuffs his Targus XL there is awkward stuff pointing everywhere, but when i stuff my Orion it still looks relativity slim for what its carrying.

Does the scout have more space than the Orion in the laptop compartment?

Yup, it definitely has more space. Probably about 2 textbooks worth and a bit more.

Wow i can safely assume it will be easier to fit my Asus G73 in the Scout than my Orion. I really want to purchase it but including the currency conversion and shipping it will be around $165NZD. I bought my Orion for $120NZD. :(
