As per the title, anyone has used external battery pack for charging/extending laptop battery time?

External batteries are not designed for the high power draw of notebooks. Using one risks damage to both the battery pack and your computer.

Not really. As @saturnotaku mentioned, your average external battery is not designed to power a laptop. They are for lower-draw devices like phones and tablets. There are some specifically made for laptops, but even those seem to be for lower draw laptops/ultrabooks and won't do well with a gaming laptop.

Not hot-swappable, but some higher end models do still come with removable batteries I believe.

The P775DM comes to mind. Not the biggest battery ever, but still removable.

The Lenovos were the last ones that supported a battery in the ODD bay I think, but I haven't seen one in a while.

There are few machines that can be configured with hot-swappable main batteries (Fujitsu T937, some Panasonics), and quite some which have easily replaceable batteries. ODD batteries also ain't totally extinct yet, but since the move towards 9.5mm ODDs their capacity became too small to bother, it's usually more proficient to purchase an extra main battery.

That wouldn't work for a gaming notebook (those big 200W+ adapters).

But for devices with hybrid graphics where you can completely turn off the discrete GPU, wouldn't it be possible to calculate teh maximum power draw in stress testing using iGPU (which should be less than 100W), and get a suitable bank for only hybrid MODE
