Well after much reading, I am down to the Timbuk2 Commuter and the Crumpler Seude/Horseman both brands seem well made. My concern is the that Timbuk2 is lined with gray (although the reivew said it was lined with yellow which I think is cool. I could blow $180 on the crumpler Suede but not sure it would protect my 17 inch ASUS and nobody owns one and I can't find more info which is concerning for $180.

I need something big for the 17 inch but want something with lot's of pockets and cool styling.

    Any votes for either one?

    Thanks,

    Jayson

well, what are the dimensions of your computer? that info should be available from the ASUS website.

here's the max laptop dimensions for the crumpler horseman: 15.4x11.8x1.6"

    and the timbuk2 commute x-large 15.4x10.5x1.25"

My laptop will fit in either bag, I am wondering if anyone can give insight as to the design and overall look of the competiting products. Seems like the Timbuk2 is more durable and secure but the Crumpler more stylish with more pockets and volume, which is important to me.

Well, I'm not as familiar with the Crumpler, but I know the Commutes are exactly what you're looking for, in terms of lots of pockets. I do think the Crumplers are a little better looking than the Commutes, but Timbuk2 makes them in all sorts of color combinations, so if you shop around you should find plenty of styling options. And the Commute is a whole lot cheaper too.

If you are picky about your styling, you may want to consider the Timbuk2 Laptop Messenger. It doesn't have as many pockets as the Commute, but it can accomodate slightly larger laptops (Large Laptop Messenger Vs. X-Large Commute) and it can be custom made to your specs.

I just dropped $160 on a custom Timbuk2 laptop messenger bag (size large) which will fit my 15.4" Asus, as well as a Zeroshock III carrying case, for double protection.

Timbuk2 makes them fast too. I ordered mine on Friday night, and the custom bag was shipped on Tuesday. Here's a link if you're interested.

How padded is the Timbuk2 Laptop Messenger? Would you feel safe putting it in there without a sleeve?

I don't know anyone that has one, but I did run across this review (from this very forum) from a couple years ago. The "Very Busy Man" is the same thing as the renamed "Horseman". Most of the pictures are no longer viable, but the review is still handy I think.

And here's the official manufacturer's website:

I do think the Crumpler would be a good choice, especially in terms of your request for lots of pockets. They look good too. Just pricey. Here's a nice 'open' view:

Under normal use (walking around) I most definitely would consider it safe without a sleeve. However, I actually use my messenger bags for their original intended purpose, transportation by bicycle. I don't trust ANY bag by itself when it comes to a spectacular cart-wheeling wipeout on hard pavement. And it is depressing to think about just how many times I've been hit by cars over the years and been in exactly that scenario. :(

    Well -

Just sent an email to confirm that the interior lining is yellow and not the boring gray as listed on the web site. If it comes back yellow I am going for it.

    More to come...........................
