I see no point in them anymore. All the mice now work on just about any surface.

I do. I use my laptop on my coffee table, and its surface is relatively rough-hewn pine boards. So a mousepad is much smoother. My mice work fine on the table, but the relatively rough surface wears out the little slider feet on the mice. I order "custom" mousepads from ebay with photos (of my choice) of hardware from my favorite TV series.

My optical mice are all 5+ years old. They worked better with mousepads five years ago; they work better with mousepads today -___-

Yes. Whether mousing on my desk, a stack of paper, or a book, the mouse feet pick up all sorts of crap that doesn't really stick to a good quality mousepad. It also glides more smoothly.

I still prefer a mousemat with an wrist rest, I find my parm get red and sore from pressure if i don't.

My desk is made of glass. While my mouse works perfectly on it, the desk stays cleaner if I use a mousepad. It is more comfortable too.

While most mice can work on almost any surface, I definitely notice a benefit over most of these surfaces with a mousepad - especially in games.

    sgogeta4,

Agree! When precision is required (photoediting), a mousepad is essential.

I submit that mousepads have never stopped being useful as they improve the feel, or glide, or the mouse dramatically. This is especially true if your mouse has large teflon pads, and pad is made of a smooth material.

    So yes.

Unless you're talking about coarse-fabric pads, which were ideal for ball-mice, but suck horribly for anything else. Those are crap.

I use a mouse pad that has a wrist rest and USB ports in it.It use to be that many companies were giving away pads with their logo on them as a form of advertising.I don't see that anymore.

I wouldn't even think of using my Mamba on a bare desk or table. Mice (at least good ones) are precision tools, and need to be cared for as such. ;)

I use the Razer eXactMat. It's a dual-sided anodized aluminum pad, with a rough textured Control side and a slick smooth Speed side. I prefer the Speed side 99% of the time, but there's something for everyone.

    Depends on use and surface.

If you're casual and not caring much and have a decent surface, no mousepad is fine.

Other than that, for professional editing/gaming, yes!

I always use a mousepad (in the rare occasions I travel with a mouse, I also travel with a mousepad) - it not only protects the desk surface, but also prevents dust and other crap from getting caught in the mouse's feet. And I love my mousepad, which has a wristrest.

I do use mouse pad even with logitech performance mx which tracks even on glass, not for the precision or anything, but just to protect my mouse's feet.

XTrac Ripper personally. I also keep an XTrac Pro with my G73. I'm all about the high-thread-count fabric mousepads, and XTrac is the best for that.

I still use a mousepad. An "Everglide Titan", to be exact. Thing is about as big as a door mat. I find if I don't use it, the parts of my hand that touch the surface of my desk or table cause more friction(or rather, my skin tends to want to stick to them more) than when I use the pad.

Yup, I still use a mousepad. If I am going to be spending $50+ on a mouse I don't want those damn Teflon feets to fail before the hardware itself. :p Plus, I use a wrist rest.

I always used an old shirt for my mouse which has a red lazer. When I recently purchased my Logitech G500 I got a special mousepad for lazermouses with it (goldenlazer mousepad) for 5 euros, and it works pretty good...but its too small.
Then I bought a cheap 2 euro mousepad, you know the ones made of mush with a thin textile layer as the surface. I must say this works perfectly, it was only after that, that I've realised my G500 works on the table cloth (my old logitech always lagged at that surface) I currently use xD

    I use this USB sucker.

    http://www.cybersnipa.com/us/gaming-surfaces/tracer-mousepad.php\

I love the surface on it, plus it goes great with Razer mice like the Mamba and the 16-buttoned Naga.

For travel I threw the one Alienware comes with into my bag just to have something to use when I need the mouse pad on my chair arm or something.

I used to have a similar one, the Thermaltake Gamma Pad. It was a hard plastic surface with a USB-powered multicolor LED border.

I'm trying to buy the eXactMat from Razer, with little success, I love the wrist rest for those marathon gaming sessions! On a side note, my friend actually uses a marble tile for a mouse pad and washes it with his dishes once a month or as needed, he plays all the twitch shooters and does quite well!

Check out the Vespula, it's what Razer released this year to replace the eXactMat. Same concept (dual-sided, Speed and Control surfaces, included wrist pad), except made from hard plastic instead of aluminum. I have both the eXactMat and the Vespula, and I'm happy with both.

Full disclosure: Vespula is smaller than the eXactMat. Supposedly, it also has a superior control surface, but if it is superior it is only slightly so. Metal mousepads tend to collect oil while plastic ones do not. Many consider the gel wrist guard on the Vespula to be inferior to the eXactMat version because it is stiffer.

Also, the Vespula is very gray while the eXactMat is black.
