Has anyone been using apple keyboards for gaming? I recently purchased the wired keyboard with number pad by apple and so far I've been loving it. The typing is amazing quiet and smooth. The low elevation level is great as well.

My question is regarding the life of the keyboard if anyone has used it long enough for gaming. How many years on average do you think I could get out of it if I play games 6 hrs a week. Games could consist of strategy, role playing and fps.

I also understand that this is completely unto the user, however even if you post how long you have had your and the type of usage for gaming, it would be great.

I played WoW 10 hours a day, 7 days a week for 3 years straight on that keyboard. Even every single key still looks brand new. This should last 5 years easy as long as you don't drop it.

If you play any 'hardcore' games (WASD intensive, like FPS) you will notice wear after about 5-10 months of pretty standard use, although only playing for 6 hours a week would probably be negligible wear on any keyboard.

I would also strongly suggest getting a wrist rest since the flat keyboards offer no support.

The Apple keyboard is not ideal for gaming in any way, shape or form due to the extremely shallow key press and poor reflex. But, they come with Macs and you won't be gaming all that much there's really no reason to replace it.

The finish apples uses on their keyboards are fairly high quality, and they should not come off in 5-10 months unless it was a defect in the factory.

I saw that thread title and I literally cringed. :(

EDIT: I hope you're not using the Apple Mouse to game also? (Magic or Mighty)

lol...thanks for the advice everyone. Main reason I bought it was because of the comfort when typing. I hook it up to my work laptop and its amazing....beats the crappy dell keyboards by far. I will look into getting a wrist rest. I like the low design as it somehow forces me to keep my hands from resting when typing. I find myself doing that on the normal keyboards for some reason.

As far as gaming, I've played several games on it, but i don't game as much as I used to. However, I do play every type of game possible. My main concern arose due to such a thin built and design...i started wondering whether it would last or not (specifically after a nice weekend of gaming and stressing the keys a bit). I'm definitely not one of those users who will bang on keys or punch the keyboard during a heated competition online..lol.

If you like the keyboard for typing, it does not make much sense to get two different keyboards and swap them out when gaming.

For you maybe it would be a smart choice to get one of those gaming dedicated keyboard extensions that feature the WSAD key as well as some programmable buttons so you do not wear the keyboard down when gaming.

    Something like this Belkin

    or this from Logitech

I have a 25% off coupon for Logitech that should work for that accessory too.

I can vouch for that Belkin N52TE, it's a hell of a gadget. Fits easily in a backpack, so you don't need a dedicated gaming keyboard.

Well, you can game on any keyboard, even if it's a mac keyboard, it's only a matter of how comfortable are you with it, and comfort is rather subjective. Personally, I never liked typing on shallow keyboards, mechanical keyboards with high keys are great.
