    Hello All,

I have a lenovo t61p and I would like to get some stationary speakers for home use. I am not a audiophile but I am one of those crazy people who swear they can hear difference between an mp3 and the original at almost any encoding bitrate and I love quality. I understand the Creative T20 ( http://us.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=4&subcategory=28&product=14299) are pretty expensive. A decent 2.1 system is pretty close to this price point but I like the simplicity (cable management/space) of a 2.0 system.

    Here are my questions
    1) Are these speakers worth the money at $78 after tax?
    2) Since I am working with a laptop built in sound card - should I just buy something cheaper because my laptop will not even push these well?
    3) What other choices do I have for pro-consumer 2.0 speaker systems?

    Thanks,
    Darshu

Those are much better. I do understand your cable management but there isn't really that much more cabling to this and for the difference in SQ, I think it is worth it. I personally wouldn't spend that much money on the Creative's (I like my low end and they don't satisfy me). I use these with my laptop and they sound great.

sorry but the best 2.1 system ever to come out of the creative stables is this:

Cambridge Soundworks Megaworks THX 2.1 250D
They are a little old, but they hold their value so well and the bass is absolutely phenomenal. You can't find anything better for the money.

Also, if they are still available, and you want to go REALLY cheap, i suggest the altec lansing avs300. I have them for 2 years and they seem very good to me, despite my onboard hd audio card.

Thanks for all of the input but I get the feeling everyone is telling me to go 2.1. Since I am aiming for clarity over bass (& space/cable management), will the 2.1 really that much better better than a 2.0 system? Had a 5.1 THX logitech setup hooked up to a sound blaster xi-fi before and almost never used the bass much since my parents where sleeping :p .

Almost all of the setup listed are more expensive and are THX. Is the THX even worth it since most movies that use THX are in 5.1 and plus my laptop sound card most likely does not support THX.

Thanks for all the help again. Just trying to get the most bang for my holiday funds.

the reason why I didnt go anything over 2.1 was due to my laptop's soundcard just like you. Having used to 2.0 systems for ages, I loved the extra depth the subwoofer gave my tracks, but then your parents might think otherwise..

THX is worth having. Its a quality standard not a format like Dolby or SRS. All THX means is that your speakers are good for watching movies. And George Lucas owns it :p

If that is the case, you may be better off investing in some good headphones as well as a set of speakers?
