All the almost generic names (with a letter added or subtracted) from Amazon where you can sometimes get good feedback are ALL no-go's for USB 3.0 hubs. Just look at the one-star reviews and the products don't look like they even work at all: absolutely ALL of them, absolute junk.

Amazon has become the dumping grounds for Chinese junk, but where else can you get good product feedback? Ebay and Amazon are about 10% tops on their money back guarantees, and then not worth the time/shipping invested.

Is there any quality anywhere any more? I don't want to short my new laptop mother board out or burn my house down on a $5 usb hub (or a $50 one either)!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I bought an Anker USB 3.0 hub which had excellent reviews on both Amazon and regular sites, even though it is powered via AC power, when connecting my external USB HDD they would disconnect randomly. Anker then sent me a brand new model without even taking the old one back but still, it disconnects with external HDDs. I just gave up wasting my time on USB hubs and don't believe in them

Well looks like your external USB HDD is not USB 3.0 compliance, and the Anker USB 3 noncharging Hub has a current cap of ~ 900ma per port.

Common disconnect issue is either the device is requesting an out of bound value / power requirement exceed availability.

USB HUBs are seriously hit or missing nowadays and harder to find good ones thanks to that flood.
Most of them so poorly made that most people won't realize how really bad it is once they finally connect that third or so port.

Crappy USB hubs connecting to crappy USB devices are the worst.

However, I'm slowly trusting plugable.com brand at the moment.
They are only the few vendors I know that provide firmware updates to their products.

Thanks, that's exactly the lead I was looking for... well until I started looking at Amazon 1 star ratings. These are messing computers up by over writing files and having unrecoverable errors (about 8.5% 1 star ratings, and overall 4.5 of 5 stars?) Anyway, I can't gamble my new laptop on that.

They seem like a good company trying hard, but not that good and not that hard, ha ha. Where are all the big boy Japanese and S. Korean companies who hold the hands of the countries who make these devices? The whole pc system is only as good as the worst bottleneck. Are we expected to buy $2000 laptops for every 4 usb 3.0 ports needed mobile or desktop either one? Talk about screwing the pooch! Who would risk this?

I ordered KDQ1 from eBay, and a shorter angled USB3.0 cable for convenient connection. I use USB2.0 version of this hub, and love the design with switches, although the lights are too bright. Will power it either from my CoolerMaster 120W PSU which has 2xUSB ports, or separate 5V 2A adapter if the PSU freaks out.

Well, I looked at APC since somewhat reliable products and the main complaint about their usb 'chargers' was 2.1 Amps MAX no matter how many usb outlets. So I got this nifty APC surge protector with 3 usb outlets BUT they don't even specify how many Amps??? However the mobile surge protector was a main feature PLUS a 6 outlet h0me surge protector for only $25 shipped total. At least I can go back for a long APC surge protector w/2 usb chargers (2.1 A max) or a wall APC surge protector with the same specs (after I find out how many/little amps max on my mobile APC usb chargers/surge protector.) It was worth a gamble since their surge protectors are good as gold, and I definitely need a new mobile surge protector anyway.

That of course is for usb 2.1, so they are just refining usb 2 designs, much less 3.0 or 3.1 usb, lol. It's all a vapor marketing smoke screen mainly for glorified sales adjectives.

As far as 3.0 (or 3.1) usb ports that magically connect data wise to your computers, I'd wager that will be about the same time pigs fly, give or take.

If you don't mind paying $500 for a USB hub, you can always get a new professional-grade monitor...

I'll just use APC usb power/surge stations for $22 each and wait for someone to spill the beans on where to go. This is an artificial manufactured shortage like the tulip craze hundreds of years ago: nothing more than greedy manufacturers exploiting the public. I'll survive on 4 - usb 3.0 on my new laptop and 2 - usb 2.0 on my old laptop.

It would take 6 months total time to start up a clean room robotic conveyor assembly line to make thousands of hubs per day at about $15 cost each with USA overhead and a 20% profit. Maybe they are just waiting on someone to show them how, so they can copy and steal their ideas for nothing :)
