I would avoid that because logically speaking, it will obstruct your bottom intake fan vent(s) which will lead to higher temps overall.

I picked up a Belkin notebook cooler from Wal-Mart for $30 and it is amazing. Single fan powered by USB (not that I ever need to plug it in, the fact that the bottom vents are cleared and the back/side exhaust vents aren't blocked by my legs is a vast improvement). The top is curved plastic for the notebook and the bottom is actually padded so it is very comfortable while in bed/on the couch.

Works excellently. It won't beat an active cooling pad, of course, but for a passive pad it'll keep your legs cool and give plenty of space for your laptop's fan to work.

I use the notepal x2. The top is completely mesh and it intakes from underneath, along with vents in the front and the back. Some of them might be blocked by blankets, but you should be able to position it so you'd get airflow at least through the back vent. Works pretty good even passively.
