So I've been looking for a while now and I haven't managed to find a way to play audio over wifi in a similar way to how bluetooth would work, ie. connecting my laptop directly to a set of speakers (or a receiver which would plug into speakers).

I'm not looking to use my router as a bridge nor do i want any other bridges involved. there shouldn't be any lag so that i can watch a movie on my tv screen and it'd match up to the audio.

I managed to find this by logitech which is exactly what i want, but although announced in 2011 it looks like it was never released, they only released a bluetooth version which was announced alongside it.

Ideally i want an adapter like this one as it'd be cheap and i can use my own speakers. I feel like I'm missing something here as it seems to be something which should be readily available?

Please no talk about bluetooth, i'm not interested in that for many reasons.

That's because WiFi isn't a protocol designed to transmit audio.

If you're not using Bluetooth, use some kind of 2.4Ghz wireless speaker system, or use an audio streaming system that supports WiFi (like Sonos).

And the item you're looking at from Logitech is WiDi (Wireless Display), which is a wireless protocol that does carry audio.

I have this funny feeling that wireless is not a good conduit for good audio. Prefer wire anytime.

Wifi is not a good audio protocol. Neither is bluetooth. Lossy and inferior, degrades sound. Wired best.

What makes you believe WiFi is lossy?

I don't understand how one would be inferior to another. It's a protocol and unless you're doing real-time streaming without a buffer or error correction, it will be perfectly fine. You should be able to replicate exactly the data at the source where you want it to be played. It is digital, after all.

WiFi is a poor method to carry audio over any distance. Very prone to easily glitching from errors or dropouts of signal.

For proper wireless audio, you are looking at wireless dac, for whatever reason, they are not cheap. A cheap phone or pc would work but require set-up.

If the op mean using WiFi to carry analog audio, then it just doesn't sound right.

Couple years ago I grabbed a set of this system:

    http://www.pocket-lint.com/review/71639-creative-sound-blaster-wireless-headphones

I got them from ebay, one usb transmitter for roughly 15 eur and few receivers for 10 euros. Then I got the headphones too, I think they were almost 30 euros. All new. Old, obsolete stuff is sold cheap but I don't care as it works good enough for me.

Whatever audio I have playing on this laptop, it is also transmitted wirelessly to other rooms/receivers in this apartment. Good use for old computer speakers everyone have stuffed in the closet :)
