I am considering the purchase of either an AverTV Hybrid Volar MAX or an AverTVHD Volar. I'm moving back to my school dorm this weekend, and I have cable TV in the room.

The AverTVHD Volar model claims that it's HDTV only? If I have cable, does this mean that I will not be able to watch channels that are not showing HD programming, even if I have cable?

Here are the links to the two products:

    Thanks!

Well what country are you from? In the USA, only the Volar Max would be available (unless you want the Nano Expresscard).

You can have both cable and HD channels but you can only choose between one. The good thing is that it saves your settings for each individual use (cable, hd, qam, etc). you just got to switch what signal you would like to use at the time.

I'm in the USA, but I found the HD Volar on Ebay and on the company's website.

My concern is whether or not the HD Volar will work with analog cable. It claims HD output only, while the Volar Max is a "hybrid," citing analog and digital compatibility. I'm not sure if my dorm's cable is digital, but I'm guessing that it isn't.

    Thanks!

I have the Volar Max and it works for both over the air HD and regular analog cable signals (haven't tried any other inputs). The nice thing about the software that comes with the unit is that it will save your settings for each input and you can easily switch between them (as arcy said).

    guys,

i'm trying to configure an hp notebook with the following specs:

Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)

    Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T5850 (2.16GHz)

    15.4" diagonal WXGA High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1280 x 800)

    3GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)

256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS - For Core 2 Duo

    250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive

Primary CD/DVD drive SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support

also, i'm looking for a decent fm/tv tuner that is truly portable (no need to connect to a home cable, although a miniature antennae like that of the HP's will be just fine ). if possible, the one which can make me use my notebook as a PSP monitor (if there is such thing as that).

actually, i'm leaning towards AVerMedia AVerTV Hybrid Volar Max MTVHBVMXR USB 2.0 Interface. please give me an idea if this will work properly on my configured notebook.

hope you can help me with this. i'm already having headaches.:confused2:

    thanks in advance.
