Just picked up one of these tiny USB flash drives on sale.

Im only getting 4-5MB/s max on write and read is fairly slow compared to my Cruzer.

    Confirmed to be very slow.

Aren't these pretty much the dirt-cheapest you can buy fom Sandisk?

EDIT: Just dug out some Blades. 4MB/sec write.

    YGWYPF :p

Sounds about right. There is a big reason why some 8GB memory sticks cost $6, while some other 8GB sticks cost up to $20. Having a faster memory controller costs more, and increases the price of the unit.

If you want a fast memory stick, you might want to look into the Patriot XT series. I've had very good luck with them.

The thing is it costs nearly the same as my Sandisk 16gb Cruzer and that performs just fine.

Im not really after speed, just something generally convenient which i thought the Blade was.

I did a search on the shops I use, it always comes out as the cheapest. Just searched for 8Gb for example, and it's almost half the price of the retractable Cruzer.

According to that link, they're both cruzers, just with a different case design. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me - more likely you just have a defective one.
    Tried returning it?

Its not defective, they all are limited to 4MB/s according to reviews over the internet.

My friend bought 3 from AU and i ordered mine from the UK and they are all slow.

I have a 4 GB one and its pretty slow as well.

A step up from my 5 year old 1 GB flash drive, but slower than a 2 GB sandisk cruzer...

If you want fast get a Corsair Voyager. I also have two 8GB Patriot Razzo's that are quite fast too.

I use 8GB Cruzer as a backup where I have my Windows install. I didn't find it that slow (I mean it was OK for a USB). Apart from all the junk bloatware it came with and its built like crap. I only bought it because that's all they had at Buy More.

My old Corsair Voyager 1GB (Yarr, mateys!) is still going strong. :)

Yeah I have a 16GB Corsair Voyager. The actual drive came loose from the rubber housing and was a little flaky acting. Sent it in under warranty and sent me a brand new one. I love good warranties like that.

How much speed are normal drives supposed to get?

I think my Sandisk Cruzer is about 25 mb/s read? 15mb/s write?

Patriot Xporter XT Rage are the fastest usb2-s atm. and can get them cheap.
Quad channel so as fast on most pc as usb2 limit lets it 27/25.
    Caples design.

Corsair 32GB GTR-s refurb. ones were on sale so picked up 2 .. 43cad$
Now everything to set up a new pc fits on 1 stick :p

Have OCZ Rally2 old 16gb .. bought the new second generation .. speed was better but the quality went to crap was lose inside knocking left and right ... give it away.

Got usb3 from Super Talent 16gb ... fast usb2 .. but not yet time to mainstream usb3 til everyone got new pc-s
Got full persistent ubuntu install on it.

And yep always google around b4 buying ;)

    Yes roughly around that.

I just tried to copy 10gb and it took about 50mins.

Its size and shape is excellent but the speeds are just disappointing.

This is probably the first Sandisk product i would tell people to avoid.
