I went to Best Buy yesterday; while I was there, I looked at a few of the Wenger bags (the Synergy and Maxxum). To give you an idea of how serious I am about this, I considered not mentioning it, but I then decided that I am, in fact, morally obligated to do so.

I am by no means a computer expert. I do, however, feel comfortable calling myself a backpack expert.

I was expecially impressed with the Synergy. Well-organized, tough as nails, two bottle pockets, two deep wand pockets (e.g. for an umbrella), well padded. It also has a fold-down sheet to help it stand upright when placed on the ground. It also has a pocket designed for audio players, but I think it's perfect for carrying a poncho or folding rain jacket (one of which I do have at all times). If you like elastic-mounted straps, there's another plus. I always walk holding my straps, so it's not my thing, but it's definitely a nice touch - especially since they're fairly sturdy (some aren't). It's also a very attractive backpack, if a bit flashy.

The Maxxum isn't quite as tough or well-organized, and it's a little flashier, but it's larger and, overall, still quite a nice backpack.

I definitely recommend the Synergy with a score of 8.5-9/10 and also feel comfortable giving the Maxxum a score of 7/10.

    Best,
    Howie

I have had the Synergy bag for about a year now, and I just ordered a notebook a few days ago. The bag has pockets for almost anything and everything you can think of that you would put in a backpack.

The bottom rubber piece is very good at keeping the bottom dry. And the top small pocket is a great place to put quick access items other than CD players. I am not sure if I like horizontal strap, although it is good to have it can get annoying. The back part of the bag has good padding, and the zippers are very nice.

I agree with HMLintz, the Synergy is a very good notebook bag. I was turned off by th Maxxum because it looked cheaper.

I bought the Maxxum last week and I love it. I was turned off by the Synergy because to me, it looks ugly. I like the style of the Maxxum a lot more.

I'm just waiting for someone to scream out "MEDIC!"
