    The "Prop."

It is currently in "kickstarter" phase. As in, raising funds to begin production through the grassroots investor site Kickstarter

I'm already in for an $18 donation. Which not only gets them closer to their modest goal(they're likely to hit it) and counts as a pre-order for one "Prop"

[Sorry that this sounds like an advertisement  ]

Not very revolutionary. I have something similar since 2008 (bought it for 10-12 Euros):
    Klappständer 'X-CROSS' für Notebook's - Arbeiten Sie: Amazon.de: Computer & Zubehör
Xystec Universelle Notebook-Ablage aus Leichtmetall: Amazon.de: Computer & Zubehör

Sorry, I have no english-speaking site at hand. Both links are technically the same product. When unfolded it pretty much does the same like what you posted and it's much more mobile when folded.
The only advantage I see in your product is that it should be lighter since it's made of plastic, not of metal.

And it looks WAY better. Those things are both hideous. Function and design do not have to be mutually exclusive.

Aesthetics are important, a big reason why people buy Macs or Alienware...

plus, it isn't as short when "disassembled" but still condenses pretty well

    That's YOUR opinion.

besides: It's either underneath my laptop or in my bag. So why should I care for the looks?

As far as I can see from the photos on those Amazon pages., Those stands are quite visible. And you're right, looks aren't everything!

This is an interesting idea. I'd get it but i don't think my laptop would sit on it nice cause its too big and heavy

Well it's supposed to be able to accommodate 13-17" notebooks, and the material it's made from should be able to handle it. When I get mine I'll let you know :)

It's a nice idea. Cheap to make too.

That said, I'd have to go for this if I wanted something in that vein - MUCH more useful.

While I personally think that thing is kind of pointless (as there are alternatives that are cheaper or more functional), I'm tempted to toss them a few bucks simply because they are going to be manufacturing this product in the USA.

for $18 bucks i'd expect a little more. that thing would be a hit @ $5-$10.

it doesn't have the portability that my cool balls (hah!) have, and isn't as versatile as my Targus X-Stand.

Well it's an 18 dollar donation, and you also get one of the stands. I doubt they'll be 18 bucks once the kickstarter program is done(I mean you can do a 500 dollar donation as well :p )

I think that company should offer you stock for your donation, I mean its a corporation, its a bit difficult to get any sorts of charity, investments are a lot easier (but not easy).

There isn't as much incentive to do something similar to Minecraft where they get development funds by giving you beta access, you can't get beta access to a laptop stand, and a laptop stand is worth the asking price (or less). On the other hand Minecraft might be worth $100 to some people so their more down to pay to get it early/for development.

If someone has access to a CNC mill then I could probably find the files I used when I made this for my GCSE project. I used an akasa 80mm fan, but provided it's 20mm deep and has the correct thickness plastic then any should work (I'm not sure if the latter is standardised). You may need to fiddle round with the centre slot demensions depending on what material you use. Besides milling it out, all you have to do is drill some holes for screws (you can thread them if you want to be fancy) and clean up the edges (if you have liquid coolant while you mill then you coul skip this step, I wasn't that lucky).

I designed it to fit any 15-17 inch laptop confortably. The centre notch is a little weak before you assemble it, but once you screw the fan in everything becomes fairly rigid. Including the fan I think I paid about £20-25 on this, if you organised things a little better than I did then you could probably shave another £5 off from the acrylic.

You can probably build that with a laser cutter, or if you want to spend more, LEXAN (which you can cut).

Speaking of cheap, I use the cardboard box that my wired keyboard came in for my laptop stand. Just stuff it full of some cheap paper and voila! instant stand.

does that add any additional airflow? or are you just having it on a slightly higher flat surface
