Ive been looking for a napsack for when I travel to hold my laptop (15"), headphones ( sennheiser HD598), a hard drive, some clothes, cables, and occasionally my iPad (but a iPad compartment isn't mandatory).
    Thanks for any help.

I picked up a North Face Surge II a few weeks ago. Definitely the best backpack I've ever had.

It meets your criteria too. It has a nicely padded laptop compartment, an iPad sleeve, and lots of extra room for accessories.

I believe I paid just over $100 for it.

Amazon shows lowest price of ~$106 at present.

FWIW (to the OP) I just went through the same process this past 2 weeks.

1st it is way easier to make a buy decision if you can actually see and feel a backpack. Online buying is really difficult.

2nd I'd never buy a hi-end label like "North Face" for carrying around my laptop computer. Theft for one thing; the label shouts steal me. If I were climbing K2 I'd consider North Face products.

Anyway, after 2 weeks of looking and thinking and then more looking, I decided on another cheap Jansport backpack for $25 and $5 shipping. See: Amazon.com: Jansport Right Pack Colored Label: Sports & Outdoors

I can definitely agree with #1. I spent hours researching backpacks online when I could have decided in a few minutes if I had been able to see and feel them in person .

#2 depends on where you live and what you do with your bag. I purchased my bag for high school this year and college next year. I always have my bag with me in class or in a secure location. If you are worried about the security of your bag, a North Face product might not be the best option.

Regardless of the name brand, I feel like the Surge II backpack has the best layout of any bag I've seen/used. Jansport is a good, quality company, but the bag layout looks iffy. I personally don't like bags with only one large compartment. The lack of a large organizational pocket is another thing that would make me hesitant to recommend that bag.

I would stop by a few sports/outdoors stores and look at a few bags.

For me the north face would be better than the jandport because I do need the organization and I'm not worryed about it being stolen (it will never be left somewhere that that could be an issue). With that said from what I've seen of the surge II doesn't quite seem like what I need because I wouldint feel comfortable just putting my headphones in the main compartment. I really need a seperate compartment to put them in that they will be safe ( even a dslr pocket would probibaly work).

Check Swissgear backpacks, I've nothing but good experience with them. Although you might need to get something bigger than 15.6" even if your laptop is 15.6" because they often make their backpacks to fit the laptops tightly. Plus they have some checkpoint friendly so that might be helpful too.

After looking at the link xero posted I looked at the other incase bags and the EO travel backpack seems perfect but it's not available yet and it's more expensive than I would have liked. Anyone know a similar alternative?

Ohh and thanks for all the different suggestions everybody.

I don't see a point in spending over $75 on a backpack. I use a LL Bean Deluxe and it works just fine with my laptop, headphones, and school-related papers/books/whatever. However, maybe getting a hard case for your headphones would be a good idea; I'm always worried that I'd break my Sennheiser HD 429 headphones in my backpack :p
