I'm in the market for a laptop backpack to transport my new 15.4" laptop. What i'm looking for is something with good protection obviously. It looks like a lot of the backpacks out there don't have any sort of padding for the top side of the machine.

What would be my best bet for good protection in the $100-150 canadian range?

    Thanks

yes, i mean the top where the laptop goes in. do any backpacks offer padding there or would i have to go for a side entry one?

I am not sure if too many backpack have a padded top...But you shouldn't be throwing your backpack on the top anyways...Right??? :p

I think sidebags would have more protection on top. However they hurt your shoulder after you wear them for a while.

if you're looking for THAT kinda of protection, you might wanna consider a briefcase type, I don't think ANY backpacks have thick paddings on top due to the zipper. if you want high quality and durable bags, look at booq. I have the boa xl for my 17"

I just bought this one Sumdex MT-2 Series and it looks great with great protection. I don't think it has a padded top.

I have a neoprene sleeve for mine when it's in the bags...that to me is enough protection. I feel the strap on top of the inner-lining for the laptop is good enough to keep it in place very securely, and add in the sleeve on top of that for great protection. It fits in the bag snugly too which is good...no sloshing around.

Yeah, I realize it's good for the electronics, but man, I didn't move to Wilmington, NC from Ohio to enjoy the cool temps of my apartment. Too bad the ol' g/f doesn't understand that same thing. I like fresh air. Even if it's hot.

Relating on topic, I've seen my laptop temps rise about 5 degrees to around 30 idle when the windows are open...so really AC in my case doesn't make a HUGE difference unless I'm throwing it under load.

I have the Targus Pulse and Grove backpacks. Both look very nice and sturdy, plus good price too.

I will use the Pulse one more as it offers a waist strap as well. Helps for support.

Was hard deciding too, however I will pickup a normal case too for times when I dont need the backpack as it is kinda big for quick outings. But for a trip or going out for the night, it will work great. Plus has a line out slot for your media players etc. =)

My personal vote goes to the CityGear Chicago from Targus...I absolutely LOVE that backpack...tons of space, tons of storage, comfortable as ever to strap on the ol' back...and it looks cool. To me that is everything I ask for.

And the build quality to me is solid as a rock.

Try the timbuk2 Ace Day pack. It has supposed 360 protection and is probably the best looking thing out there. No offense to targus... but they really don't have aesthetic design in mind when they make their things.

Or do what I do. Get a sleeve (mines is the Pinder THIN) and then just put it in your normal backpack.
