    How do I choose here?

I don't know which way to go. I'm thinking handheld, maybe I feel that backpacks are for students and teenagers... Except when hiking.

    Help out.

I prefer backpacks, mainly because it's convienient and my laptop can go in there with everything else I need.

i use backpack everyday, eventhought i have a messenger bag, coz it's more convinient.
but when i don't have to take my laptop, i love to use the messenger bag, it's not as bulky as my backpack.

Handheld is not that convinient, you would wanna go with shoulder bag better then a handheld. it look quite professional too, well some of them.

I purchased a Targus convertable bag that can be used as a backpack, messenger bag or with just a carry handle. I liked having the options and the backpack straps hide away when not in use. I have the bag waiting for the laptop to arrive.

I bought a laptop bag thinking that i would use it, but after the first day of class, I switched to just putting it with my books in an ordinary backpack. My shoulders and back feel much better, it's easier to move around in tight spaces with only one item and it doesn't look like you have a giant target on your back by carrying around a bag that looks like it has something expensive (laptop) in it.

I have a very nice Oxio Style Freedomer messenger type laptop bag, I love this bag to bits and I was using it everyday for work with my 14.1" Asus. The biggest issue I have had with it is being an over the shoulder style bag. Even carrying around a lightweight laptop (an XPS M1330) I was having issues with my neck and shoulders after a while of constant use (I used this bag everyday for about 8 months now).

I have now moved to a Northface Bandwidth backpack and my back, neck and shoulders love me for it. Thats probably the biggest thing anyone should consider when choosing a bag type. If you have to commute or carry more than just your notebook I would seriously get a backpack (goes well even in an office like where I work) and you can carry the weight evenly.

Yes my Oxio bag is way cooler and far more stylish but my shoulders shouldnt be abused in the name of coolness..personally I want to sit straight when I am 60 without major back issues.

I still use my Oxio when I dont have to commute and just drive places but for everything else I use the backpack. Have you seen the Crumpler backpacks? Or the Booq ones? They are all very nice and I think the Crumplers are some of the more stylish ones out there!

Im using a targus miami messenger bag thats not only great for carrying my 17in around but also has space for lots of other stuff. Its not huge or bulky, and the quality is great. But as for the backpack vs shoulder/handheld it all depends on what your doing. If Im going to a lan party my mobile edge backpack carries a little more then the messenger shoulder/handheld and is the definite way to go. But when going to work or doing anything work related the handheld/shoulder messenger is more proffesional. To put it bluntly backpacks are for students and fun events and shoulder/handhelds are for professional use. Walking into a clients building with a backpack on wouldn't look professional at all.

I guess it all depens on what your normal usage will be. I have got a Dicota BacPac Rain and I love it :)
I like to have both arms free not holding anything. Used it as handluggage while travelling and it worked like a charm.
