Well, once again I have stumbled onto a whole new category of stuff where I don't know what to call what I am looking for.
What category would the following fit in:
Something about the size of fairly slim briefcase, which has excellent padding, and a couple of side pockets for carrying a few things, but is not a backpack,
not a duffle bag, not a "sleeve" (?)?
I need it for a 15.4 inch laptop, which I am in the process of getting.

I didn't know about that category.
Do you any of these come with sort of insulated liner to help keep the laptop cooler when it is in the bag, inside your car?

I am not sure I have seen anything like that but here is what I know. I would recommend you get a laptop sleeve in additional to a messenger/backpack/briefcase etc. A sleeve is like a glove for the laptop and zips real tight against it's chassis. It helps protect the laptop from crumbs, dust, junk etc in your bag of choice. It also helps prevent scratches to the machine. I am not sure if it would help keep the machine cooler though. Sleeves can start for about $10 and go up. If you want a cheap but effective sleeve, walmart sells one for $10. Most sleeves don't provide much impact protection, but that is what the bag/case is for. Some bags do come with a sleeve. I saw a Swiss gear bag come with one.

I would go to your local best buy, office max, staples and check out their selection of cases/bags/sleeves. You will get a much better idea of what you like and what will fit your needs. The prices for these things can go from mild to wild depending on how much you are willing to spend.

Thanks all. I was wondering what a sleeve was exactly. Now it is more clear to me.
