I was wondering what is the best 17" Laptop cooler. I currently have a G71GX from Asus.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=393735

And the problem is that once the GPU hits 82C the GPU pretty much underclocks or it stops working to a degree. So I was wondering how efficient are laptop coolers and what is the best laptop cooler for 17" laptops.

Also does the ambient temperature effect the laptops heat a lot?

I don't use any coolers for our G50VT Asus, just elevate it a bit. Ambient temp does affect the comp's performance.

In your case if it is still under warranty I would return it for review, it is a bit high with 82C temp. If not, try applying new/better thermal paste.

    cheers ...

Make one yourself, none of the coolers on the market are made with any quality

meh if you want prefab Zalman NC-2000 or the Cryo

The Cryo is way overpriced IMO but its the one that can put out more air, the Zalman only gives a subtle soft airflow.

Both are good for tilting your laptop up some to make it easier to type on.

I gave up on coolers, a laptop should be able to cool itself properly and just put some detachable legs on the back of my laptop to give it that tilt I wanted and increase airflow to the laptop.

$2 :D and less to carry.

the cryo LX and the nc2000 cost the same, but u get much more with the cryo LX. it's also cheaper than the antec 200. the cryo LX is a great cooler, if not the best in the market, at cooling gaming/high-end laptops.

82 Should be fine, GPU' should downclock at 90C normally.

What you should do is look at the grill configuration on the underside of your lappy, say get hold of a zalman nc2000, buy some sticky back plastic and cover everything on the zalman and cut out holes so that air can blast more directly into the intakes of your laptop. (Would effectively make the air blow stronger in specific areas also if im right?)

they actually do have about the same MSRP. the cryo LX has also been on sale for around $50-$60 usd on newegg. $5-$10 more for a much better cooler is not a big difference.

No cooler here either, just some rubber stoppers I got at the hardware store to give the fan some room to breathe and to jack up the back end to make it easier to type also. They are about an 1" high.
Thought about cutting a hole in my desk to mount in a cooler with brackets on the bottom to hold it up in place. Then router out slots for the cable plugs. Then again... have better ways to spend my time.

The Cryo is definitely the best for 17 inch. I have a Dell m1730 that I needed to cool so I bought the Cryo and the Zalman. I use the former all the time and the latter only as a backup.

I have the Zalman and it doesn't seem like it's a good fit for my G71GX. The laptop gets hot towards the back and all of the holes on the zalman are towards the middle and front. You can move the latop up on the cooler but it hangs off a bit. May return the nc2000 to newegg for the cryo.
