Hey guys, so now that I have my Asus 24" 1080p monitor on the way, it is time for me to invest in a nice sound system to couple it with! I have about 150 dollars to spend total on it, and I had a couple of potentials so far but nothing for sure yet...

My top pick right now is the Logitech X-2300 2.1 Speaker system which is going for $110 on amazon right now, and the next hitch after that is the Logitech G51 5.1 speaker system going for about 130 on Amazon. Both are great systems but the X-2300 is pulling 50 more watts than the G51 which is a ton.

What do you guys think? Any recommendations? Thanks!

if this is a system that is gonna be used mainly for listenin to music or a laptop, i would go with the x-2300. it's a very powerful system, in a very small package.

since u said this will be for yur ps3 tho, i would have to lean towards the g51. a "surround sound" system would be better for games and watchin movies cuz u will be immersed in sound from all around u.

Interesting, thanks for your input houstoned. I was thinking about the whole gaming "surround sound" immersion effect as well but I thought to myself, is a good solid 2.1 system better than a budget 5.1 system, even if it is "surround"?

I'd go with the surround sound personally. I'm all about immersion when I play games or watch movies. I think you are missing out if you are using a PS3 with only stereo speakers.

The Z-2300 does not disappoint. It's one of the best 2.1 systems you can get for that money. However, for the same money, you will only be able to get a mediocre 5.1 set. Quality > quantity. If you can save up some more, the Z-5500 may be worth it.

I'd go 5.1. Music sounds a lot better with it as well and these days $150 for home theater is good quality, as long as it isnt a huge room. I'd look into tv home theaters though, you will probably find a better deal.

Did you just say music sounds a lot better on 5.1?

Yes, it does if done right by tweaking the settings. Even in the car 5.1 sounds better.

    If I'm not mistaken...most music isn't even in 5.1..

That doesnt matter. A good home theater will simulate it. The rears will be given certain background sounds and it makes the music come alive. The logitech you linked might not, but 150 watts for $150 is a bad deal these days. Walmart has a philips 1000 watt for $180ish, and im fairly sure its a pretty good brand in home theater (for low priced systems). Probably as good as logitech which isnt much of a speaker company.

Since when did more watts mean better performance? XD Anyways, I have owned the Logitech Z-5500 before selling it to my cousin for 50 dollars (yes I know), it is a GREAT system and was great for gaming, will a similar priced HTiB give me better performance?

i have the logitech 2300s and i really love them they really loud and sound really nice.

and what is funny i went from a 7.1 creative speakers to theses :) and i love the sound and loudest and for some reason i hear more stuff in games than i did with the 7.1 system

the sub that the 2300s come with is so powerful it makes you feel like you in the game when a bomb goes off or when theres alot of gun shots like in call of dutys :)

right now im running 4.1 the Logitech 2300s my main speakers and my x rocker chair both of those sound really good together :)

sense i have a 7.1 sound card i might hook up the 7.1 speakers and have all of them running at the same time lol just gonna hook like 4 speakers of the 7.1 system up.

but ya sense i got the 2300s i cant really use any other speakers lol

so i say either the 2300s if you want really good 2.1 speakers which will beat alot of cheep 5.1 systems.

or go with the x-5500s if you really want a really good 5.1 system which i would've went with at first but did int have the money at the time but im happy with my 2300s :)

or just buy a home theater system :) i have a cheep coby 5.1 1000watt home theater system hook up to my toshiba 57in dlp for my xbox 360 and Nintendo wii and it sounds pretty good just the sub is alot weaker than the 2300s lol have to get a new sub for it soon.

150 watts split into 5 speakers and a subwoofer just isnt enough, no matter what the db rating is. a subwoofer alone needs at least 100.

That is why I also considered the X-2300, 200 watts, 2 speakers, 1 subwoofer.

I'm gonna go out and recommend something that may be a bit harder to find.

    Klipsch Promedia 2.1

Easily the best 2.1 sound system available. Made by a VERY reputable name in sound.

The Z-2300 subwoofer is 120W, with 40 for each of the two satellite speakers.
    Do it!
