I want to find the best chair to sit in while I work with my notebook either on my lap or on my desk.
Any suggestions on what to buy? Also, what cool features can chairs have (massage, heating, etc.)?
-
For just sitting & relaxing (not deskside), I recommend the Ikea Poang' Chair...(they have a footrest also).
I have it w/foot rest, and it's uber comfy awesome.
For deskside, Ikea has nice chairs, but you may also want to check your local stores like Office Depot, Staples etc..to see the different styles & your comfort level. : )
Another place to check would be a Office Furniture Outlet Store...sometimes you can get some great deals on really good desk chairs at dramatically reduced prices. And, also Consignment shop stores..may carry some nice chairs at a good price. : )
It all depends on what your looking for, really!

I went and bought an Ergonomic chair a few weeks ago from my local Staples, its a high back, with the vented back so it doesnt get to hot. I must say it was a bit costly (I think like $400cnd) but it was worth every penny, I can sit for long long hours and I dont get the same back pains I got with my old chair.
-
I used to buy the cheapest full back leather chair I could find. Now though, I've realised the error in my ways. You have to spend the money to get the comfort. Next chair I pick up soon will be considerably more comfortable, and also alot more expensive :S
-
I use an Amish solid oak rocking chair as my computer chair. Very high back and very sturdy.. super comfortable.
But, by definition, the best computer chair in the world is the Herman Miller Aeron Chair. They are extremely comfortable and many CEO's and business execs use them. -
^^That chair is extremely comfy..my old boss had one..He let me use it once for a few hours & I wanted to keep it.
I would love that one in my home.
The Aeron chair is fairly expense though, unless you are able to get a good decent discount.
I had been looking at getting a chair like this to replace my current MicroSuede High Back. -
i will definitely have a herman miller chair in my house one day! i've seen refurb aerons go for about 40%-50% off.drvenom likes this.
-
Yea, or sometimes when a company goes out of business you can buy them for cheap(er) too.
-
Or, if you know someone who works for HM, that is a nice way also for savings! : )
And, they last forever...
Steelcase has the Leap Chair..that is pretty comfy also. : )
Cin... -
If you buy a chair make sure they have some sort of warranty that lasts a few years. My excessive use of the computer chair has flattened this one completely within months, and they've replaced it twice so far.
-
Is there a generic alternative to the Aeron out there?
-
There is this at Office Depot.
It will go on sale every-so-often. And, if you have any $25 of $75 + purchase coupons, the savings are even more. : )

I'm surprised you guys are really into that Aeron chair. Doesn't look all that comfortable. One of my friends had something like that, don't know if it was an Aeron, but it was the same design/material. Wasn't anything special really.
Amazon.com: Boss Black LeatherPlus Executive Chair: Kitchen & Dining
That looks a lot comfier. What's the story with this Aeron chair? -
From the Herman Miller website:
Side note: Just found out the Herman Miller headquarters is about 140 miles from me in my State! -
1000$ chair.... the power of marketing
i really wonder how much it costs them to make one, couldn't possibly be more than 50$ -

I need a new chair, the ones I use at work are so much better than what I have at home.
I got my home chair from office depot it was like a $150 chair on sale for like $100 and even $150 is not enough for a good chair it seems.
The armwrest is my main problem, its a soft cushion that I thought would be better than the firm rubber the work chairs have but when I type my boney elbows dig into it and push against the hard plastic under, so the padding is only good for the whole arm, not the elbows.
The opposite of the work chairs while the hard rubber feels not so comfortable, it gives way just enough to cushion my elbows and feels fine on the arms.
After long hours typing I have actual elbow pains at home, so staying tuned to this thread for a new chair.
I don't think I can spend more than $300 for a good chair, and it has to be small enough to fit in my small space at home, no lazy boy chair thing is going to let me roll back from my desk.
Going to watch the one Cin' posted from Office Depot @ $300 if it goes on sale that would probably fit about to what I can afford and what I need. -
Actually they have a tendency to sag over the years with constant sitting, and parts can fall off pretty quickly if you don't keep tabs on maintenance. I've never been a huge fan of the Aerons AKA the 'Dot Bomb Specials' from an ergonomic point of view - I think they still encourage slouching, although I do like how you can break wind while sitting on them quite violently but have it all vented away in seconds.
Still, it will be better than some Office Depot special. Perhaps look for used - there must be a glut of Aerons by now.
I've still got the HAG at home which is also somewhat creaky but has been comfortable and supportive while allowing me to kick back - I've been meaning to go check out the Embody for some time as a replacement - a potentially better engineered successor to the Aeron. You could also look at other chairs in that HAG link to give you some ideas.
Look at what actually goes into a higher-end task chair (even one which can gradually fall apart) and you'll realise how dumb that sentence sounds.
For maybe two seconds after you sit, probably. All day, oh no. -
Also, cost of the chair is only one (minor) aspect of total cost. A lot of the cost is research and ergonomic studies.

Found a few listed as alternatives on ebay, about $500 but not sure how good they are (or the Aeron is for that matter) -
Stayed in a Hilton Garden Inn over the recent holidays and saw this chair in my room - thought it looked somewhat fancy for a regular hotel desk chair and it sure was... check the link
-
The Aeron is a nice chair. It's very comfortable, and ergonomically adjustable in every way possible. It is worth every penny of someone else's money.
But since I pay for my own chair, here is what I have always done: Every 4 years, I go to my local Costco, and buy whatever $200 office chair they have in the store. They have always been comfortable, high-quality, and well worth the money. My current chair (peeking out of the right side of the photo):
-
Oh, how about the Eames Lounge Chair for relaxing with your lappy. : )
Nearly $4K for one...! The owner of the company I used to work for has one in their house, has said it's awesome.
That chair looks like it would be really comfy deskside. : )
Maybe the next time OD has their "furniture sale", they will include this one
-
hey, if u do get a chance to check out the embody. please let me know how u like it or how it compares to the aeron. i've been wanting an aeron for forever now, but the embody looks really interesting. they have me kinda torn between the two. i can't really do a personal comparison cuz it's so hard finding a local shop that carries both models. yur input would be greatly appreciated.
-
The Herman Miller website has authorized showrooms and stores in most cities, are there none around your zip code?
-
Just beware not to buy a cheap chinese leather seat... I did, and I got a nice big chemical burn on my back since they treat the leather with an anti-fungal agent (DMF).
(If anyone wants to look into it further, it was called "sofa rash") -
Sure. I've been meaning to go test one out but just haven't bothered.
I know one thing for sure: I have to be just as careful in farting on it as I do on the HAG
-
i honestly haven't looked into it THAT much, but from what i've seen. the problem isn't really finding a reseller/retailer, but finding a local showroom that has the specific model that u are lookin for.
thanks much.
i agree, i will never, ever buy a regular plush leather chair for my personal desk/task chair again. i prefer the ventilation of the meshy materials. the fit, feel, and ergonomics of a high end chair is just incomparable. especially for any of u guys that spend long hours at the comp, u should definitely look into a proper chair. -

Kinda digging these Eurotech chairs:
Raynor Ergohuman High-Back Mesh Chair (EUR-ME7ERG) -
I've used Aeron chairs in Hilton Garden Inns and they really are very comfortable. although I was not sitting in them for hours on end.
-
Well... I have an office chair from Ikea, Markus to be exact. Comfy and sturdy, in my opinion. The only downside is the fact that my cats love it too, and with them being faster and nimbler, I am facing stiff competition as far as sitting is concerned.
-
those headrest features look pretty dang nifty!

Yeah I was thinking about how I like to recline back in my chair with my headphones on and just close my eyes and listen to music.
I have to really slouch in my chair to do it so its not very ergonomic, If I had one of those I think lounging back like that would be rather comfortable and not so bad for my back.
I think for sure if I spend the big $$$ on a chair I am going to make sure it has the highback/headrest style. -
The NOC at my colo uses those. They look a bit busy.
-
-
i'm going to quit my job tomorrow and go into the chair business
-
Not a bad idea. Functionally, most chairs are the same - they give your butt a place to rest.
People buy chairs because of design and aesthetics, and not performance. All you need is deceptive marketing, and you'd have a Razer product. -
Bazinga!
+rep -
Problem is, you'd need a pad to match.
-
Yeah but once I have that chair, I'll be able to plot various ways to get such a pad
-
Whats a good looking chair for around $500 or less, something that looks like kent1146's.
I sit on it around 5 hours a day, so comfortability is crucial. Last year of study means my bum will get sore from studying countless hours a day.. (ON NBR

Just came back from Staples, I was there to pick up a site2store order. Checked out the chairs while I was there.
There was one in particular I quite liked.
The Staples Vattera (SKU# 865004)
For what ever reason it is not on there site nor anywhere else on the net. What it was was a full mesh chair both bottom top and headrest, it has a nice lumbar support, arm rests that went up/down and also back/forward (nice!) great tilt back and forth, and also the seat could slide forward/back.
So the chair was very similar to the ergohuman and it was priced at $250.00 I was quite impressed with what you get for $250.00 so I am definitely keeping this chair in mind.
Next time I see some good $$$ off staples coupons this may be my new chair. -
If you decide to get it, make sure to take lots of pics!
-
I got mine from Costco for $200.
Simple, easy, good deals. And if you ever have a problem with it, Costco has a lifetime refund policy for the products you buy from them. -
Would Costco have worldwide stock? I think their are is 1 or 2 Costcos where I live but it's near the City which is 30 minutes away.
-
Keep in mind that Costco has Membership fees, in addition to the cost of your purchase. You an go in an look at items w/out purchasing, though.
-
I have this one and it´s quite nice.
Ikea Klappe
I picked it up with a 50% off about 6 months ago. -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Got the Vattera, used the current 15% off entire purchase coupon to cover tax and give me 8% off.
Really easy to put together, its deceptively heavy.
Its also a bit different than the floor model because its not nearly as broke in. Staples warranty is actually quite good its 5 years for some parts and like 10 years for the rest, so as long as they are good with the warranty I do not have to worry about something breaking.
Its much more firm and much better for my posture than the old chair.
Now I will do a 2 week use of it and come back with a review/opinions. -
Can't wait to see your review.
-
Chairs I've tried so far are the HAG H05 and the Steelcase Leap. I actually use the Leap at work. I HATE both of those chairs. I intend to try Herman Miller chairs when I am in a bit better a financial situation... maybe in a few months.
-
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
I was looking at the HAG H05 could not spot one with the options I wanted for the price I wanted.
Been in this Vattera for 4 hours not and so far so good
I can really tell the difference having that lumbar support and I look forward to reclining it back and listening to music on my headphones and having that headrest there to support me.
Its like the mystery chair because nobody here is going to know what it looks like or anything till I do the review because its totally non existent online it seems to only exists in store @ staples.
