I, too, am on the market for a fast, reliable external hard drive. However, I'm specifically looking for ultra-slim & phantom powered. I really like the Sony Vaio external hard drives (w/ security keys and all that), but still looking for alternatives.

    Any suggestions?

I'm looking specifically for a notebook drive. Considering my notebook already adds 12+ pounds to my bag, I'd like the drive as compact as possible and phantom powered (so I don't have carry around a second ac adapter).

Stay away from LaCie. Their drives are OK (usually Maxtor) but they use a very cheap power adapter and USB adapter. I have had two die on me. The drives were fine (they work as IDE drives perfectly) but they stopped functioning as external drives within 6 months.

I have a Maxtor Personal Storage 3100 100GB and it works great for storing music, and have not noticed anything bad in terms of slow USB transfer.

Best Buy had/has a deal for a $20 (i think) instant rebate making it cost around $80.

I know this doesn't necessarily fit your specs, but I think any info can help.

I have 2 Seagate 400GB external drives. They're the best external solution I have. It's quiet as hell, you can barely hear them except when you switch it on. It's especially useful if you're gonna have it on 24/7. The downside is that it is pretty big.
