If you are researching on newegg you can read the reviews right there on their site. What I usually do when I'm researching is to look at products that have a good number of reviews, then look at the percentages of good vs. bad reviews. If I see a product that has a significant percentage of people giving it 1 or 2 eggs then I will pass it by. Then for the products that go into the final comparison I will actually read the reviews, all of them if possible but if there are too many then I'll read the ones that gave the fewest eggs. Sometimes I learn more from the people that have had problems with a product than from the people that installed and say it works great. In some categories it seems that none of the products are way ahead of the others and you just have to decide on the lesser of two evils.

I bought an external DVD last month and employed this same method of searching. I wasn't interested in BluRay, and I didn't find any products that clearly stood out so I just picked one that seemed better than the others. In limited use it has done fine.

^ That's the same way I do it. Hasn't let me down yet.

I consider 4 or 5 eggs (or stars if on amazon) excellent, 3 average, 1 and 2 poor.

Definitely focus on the negative reviews. A lot can be helpful, a lot are user error/non-related to the product; for instance shipping takes a few days longer than usual and the reviewer gives the product a 1.

This drive seems decent, though it's out of stock.
