Hey fellas, I just bought myself a PS3 package for 200 dollars and I need an LCD Monitor to take full advantage of the HD goodness! Unfortunately, the PS3 only has component and HDMI for it's HD outputs...which most LCD monitors do not have, VGA/DVI seem to be the standard right now. Anyways, I can only spend under 200 dollars, the less the better...I was hoping to have a monitor at least 19 inches widescreen as I will be the only one playing it. Thanks guys!

The best deal you can get is Dell S2409W

The monitor is excellent.. With HDMI, DVI, VGA and Audio Out..

So even if you connect via HDMI you ca connect your speakers to monitor and you can get a good audio.

BTW the monitor is Full HD and at $219 . Its a steal.

Is there a reason you want a "monitor" over a HD TV?

They are the same thing these days except the HD TV is probably larger and cheaper.

I would say that also HD TV is 16:9 and monitors are 16:10 but not even that really holds true anymore as there are lots of 16:9 computer monitors on market.

That Dell @ $220 is a great price though but no link? A quick search for me only finds a few stores with refurbished units near that price, its more like $300 new.

cool well I guess there you go :p

its another one of those 16:9 monitors aka a hd tv without a tuner and call it a computer monitor :D

but for that price it seems a good bargain.

I think things marketed as TVs as opposed to monitors tend to have more image processing hardware, and they have TV tuners, so they are a little pricier than comperable "monitors". TVs also have built in speakers while monitors generally do not. But yeah, you shouldn't be overly concerned about DVI vs HDMI anyway. From what I remember, the DVI signal is functionally identical to the HDMI video component, and you can get a simple converter plug. The real question is do you have speakers? :)

TV vs Monitor in price completely depends on size. Huge monitors are very overpriced, but small ones are cheaper than tvs.

Huge monitors tend to have much higher resolutions than large TVs though. That probably has a lot to do with price.

Lol no, I was just planning to connect via HDMI and input the audio that way through the monitor. Crappy audio, but that cant be changed later down the road haha.

To the best of my knowledge, most monitors don't have speakers...

5-10 feet away is going to be pretty small with either 22" or 24". But perfectly functional. Just don't expect anything even approaching a home theater experience. For comparison, my 17" laptop screen at about 1-2ft from my face is the same size within my field of view as my 46" HDTV that is about 4-5 feet from my face. My guess is that at 5-10 feet, a 22" monitor will feel about the same as a netbook monitor in front of your face.

That is fine, it is for personal gaming and I don't need anything close to a home theater setup. Thanks for the information, it is appreciated =]

To be honest 5-10ft is a bit a lot. I have a benq monitor with HDMI and all. The main difference is that TVs are made for long range while monitors are more designed for close range. WAtching movies and all at 10ft is no problems, but video games at that range are tough on my eyes.

Yes true, but for what the OP wanted the source would only be 1080p so a higher resolution would do no good and may even hurt image quality because of upscaling.

For a computer use the extra res can be used though.

    As for size....

I do not think I will ever use a traditional computer monitor again until i have enough money to buy 3 of them at once for a 3x monitor setup (surround gaming ftw)

I have a single 37" HD LCD right now and its the greatest thing ever. Games/Movies/Web/Photoshop its all so big easy to see and immersive. It has expanded the things I can do and the enjoyment of my PC way beyond what I had expected. It was single handedly the best upgrade or purchase I have made for my computer(s) ever.

    I don't mind running my PS3 in 720P, I can't tell the difference between 720 and 1080 anyways lol.

Not sure if the Playstation is the same way or not, but I know for Xbox, 99.9% of games output at 720p natively anyway, and are just upscaled by the Xbox if you tell it to spit out 1080i/p. So you probably aren't missing anything. :)

A lot of PS3 games actually run 'proper' 1080P, the best example is GT5 Prologue. Xbox is coming up as far as 1080P games are concerned, but yeah 99% of the games on Xbox are 720P upscaled >.<

Well, I've actually worked on Xbox titles, so I know that the req is that a game's video backbuffer has to be at least 1280X720. And guess what; most games are the minimum. :) Any Xbox360 game that has a lower than 1280X720 back buffer had to get special clearance from MS management, and that doesn't happen often. I'm sure Sony has a similar req for the PS3.

    Try a LED TV.....
LED TV is a term used by Samsung to describe its line of LCD (liquid crystal display) TVsthat use LED backlighting.
LED-backlit LCD TVs do differ from conventional LCD TVs in some important areas:
1- They can produce a very bright image and deep blacks (doesn't work for Edge- LED
2- With Edge-LED lighting they can be extremely slim.
3- They can offer lower power consumption.
4- They can offer a wider colour gamut, especially when RGB-LED backlighting is used.
And I'm sure that it will satisfy your image on PS3. Good luck!

I often play my 360 on my 47'' HDTV. It's awesome. I do it less now since I have my monitor.

And monitors with HDMI-in usually have speakers and audio out. I think they were thought with people playing consoles at the same place than their computers. It's also really nice for students living in dorms.

bleh, built in speakers are never very good. if youre gaming a lot you'll want a good external system.

I might be able to bump up my budget to 250 dollars, not that it would make much of a difference! Right now I have my eyes set on the Asus VH2336H monitor...looks very nice and although not the best, has alright speakers, alright for built-in speakers anyway lol.
