I've been poking around the site for a little while now and browsing the web for a new backpack for my Asus N53sm 15.6" laptop. The actual length of the laptop is 15.6" so I've been looking into 16" laptop backpacks.

    No messenger bags.

I also need to carry around one 2.5" thick book and another 2.5" of notebooks...

I want to stay under 50US.

Here are two that I'm seriously considering.

    V7 Black

    Targus Unofficial

Another must is water resistance. I want to be able to walk around campus... up to 100 yards or better w/o worrying about damaging my laptop.

I saw the big thread with all of those obscure brands... not much direction there so I'm hoping I can get some specific attention to what I need out of a bag.

    Thanks for your help!

    awesome, thanks for the suggestion!
However I do prefer a minimalist look and anything as slim as I can get it. I do not want a giant backpack.

I have the Arc'teryx Blade 24. It is a backpack with a side handle so you can carry it as a briefcase.

It has a main laptop compartment that has room for a laptop and notebook or two.

The middle compartment is pretty big, you could fit two 2.5" binders and a notebook. It has a front zippered compartment for pens. It also has 2 top compartments, one with soft material for a cell phone and the other for a water bottle and keys.

It's pretty slim too. I don't know how much you want to spend, but you can find the Blade 25 for under $150.

Great looking pack but I did state that I wanted to spend about 50

Not bad! But I would like something a little slimmer...

    Get the A7 backpack.

It is very rugged, tons of pockets, and my thick 15.6" Precision fits it.

I would look at the swissgear ibex I believe. They claim 17 inch but it fits my series seven as well as a couple of small binders for school and some reading texts also for school very well. It is also incredibly well built. My father has actually used one for years that's why I got it. Love it and can't recommend enough.

After doing some more searches, Most websites are telling me I need to be looking for a 17" laptop bag... as my dimensions are
    15.6 x 10.6 x 1.6
    Are they right?

EDIT: Upon further searching, I believe I can stretch the pack enough to fit... as long as the length of the compartment space is at least 15"

Okay.... Well I got the first backpack mentioned.

    Case-Logic-DLBP-116-16-Inch-Backpack/dp/B003WU6KFO

It is well worth the price.
and fits my pretty much 16" Asus... even though it is listed at a 15.6", it is about the size of a 16" because of the bezel...

Case Logic said my laptop wouldn't fit correctly... and it does take minute stretching. not even stretching... just pulling the zipper over the edges of the laptop.

The only downfalls of this backpack are the fairly thin shoulder straps and the lack of padding between your back and the laptop.

That being said; this is WELL worth the money in my opinion. Especially if you're on a tight budget.
