I have an old laptop that is extremely finicky about cord placement and I can't tell if it is the adapter or the notebook. It is a compaq. What is the cheapest option for trying out a new adapter? thank you.

You can try looking on eBay to see if anyone has used AC adapters for that model. If you cannot find that, then the best option is probably getting a universal AC adapter that is compatible with your laptop (sufficient wattage, correct current, etc).

Or when my asus died I brought it downtown to a computer store (filtech) and i just bought a new one.
But!! I did also buy another power cord (the part where you plug into the wall) because the first one broke fast. It was 6 bucks and it is really long. :D
I think in total i spent like 30 bucks.
