I need an external hard drive for my new laptop, and I'm stuck as to what to buy. I have USB 3.0 in my laptop, so I'd like to go that route, and I'd like a 1TB drive.

I was looking at this Seagate Backup Plus, which looks promising, but I'm not sure. I'm buying this in Canada, and preferably at Futureshop, as I have a large gift card there. If not, I'm buying from either Staples, Newegg, or TigerDirect.

    What drive would you recommend?

I myself have been using the Fantom 2TB drive with usb 3.0 for the past year or so. I've chucked it in backpacks and taken it across town in india (you should feel the roads here) I've flown to the US and back a couple of times with it in checked luggage and so far not a single hangup.

Only thing is...I can't really tell you how much faster it is than usb 2.0. I know that writing to it is faster, but as far as read speeds it's anyone's guess really.

I got the drive off of amazon I believe. It's a proper enclosure so I think you can switch the drive out if you want, and it has a fan.

It also requires dc power though.

That was my initial thought, but the reviews on Newegg weren't that favourable. Mind you, it seems like, at least on newegg, most portable hard drive reviews are negative. In short, what do you think of the drive?

I've seen those reviews but honestly I've never had any problems with it in the last 5 or so months of almost daily use.
That said I did cheat a bit and got the nomad carrying case when I went on a trip to Europe last month. As I said however, 0 problems.

Have two WD MyDigital My Passport 1TB and both are working well for me. I got one a while back with USB 2.0, but needed more capacity, so I found a special and got a newer one with USB 3.0. The latter one is almost a year old, while the former is 3+ years now (I believe). I use my USB 3.0 drive every few days for backup and shuffling around stuff from my laptop.
