What is a good wireless mouse for around 40 bucks? Plus minus 5

Go refurbished and you can find a Logitech Performance MX for around that price range. And that is one of the best mouse I've ever used.
-
For portability, look for the Logitech Anywhere MX on sale.

I would recommend staying away from the:
* Logitech Performance MX: Short battery life, large shape, battery lasts 2 weeks before requiring recharge. You pay a premium for the Darkfield imaging sensor, which is honestly a very low-value feature.
* Logitech Anywhere MX: Small, flat shape is uncomfortable. Battery lasts 1-3 months before requriing replacing (no recharging). You pay a premium for the Darkfield imaging sensor, which is honestly a very low-value feature. -

Staples has the Logitech M525 on sale for $20 right now. I bought one today and it seems like a solid mouse for the money and saves you $20!

The Anywhere MX is built very well too, showing no signs of wear at all after more than a year of use. Recently, my Unifying adapter's contacts started wearing out (sometimes wasn't detected by computer, depending on how it was plugged in), and Logitech replaced it with no questions asked.
That said, both the Marathon and M525 are likely great candidates as well. -
I don't see a reason for the hate on the Performance MX. You can use it while you charge it.. a HUGE upgrade from its predecessor, and if you've got large hands then a big mouse isn't a bad thing. I personally can't stand to use a small mouse, not even on the run.

Why do mice like the Anywhere MX cost more yet have much poorer battery life than say a M525? The package on my M525 claims the battery will last up to 3-years using a pair of AAA batteries.

However, the big complaint I have is that it is a relatively useless feature. I almost never find myself in a situation where I actually benefit from the Darkfield imaging sensor. If I need to mouse on a glass surface, I can always use a piece of paper or a magazine as a mouse pad.
And that is coming from someone who is supposed to be the target customer demographic for Darkfield Imaging sensor mice. I travel a lot for work, and often find myself in airport lounges (shiny polished granite-top desks) and hotel rooms (glass desks).
Best Wireless mouse for 40 dollars!
