I am trying to find one as well for my 9400. I just received the Bytech NC-500 from newegg and it does nothing for the GPU temps on my notebook. I am RMAing it.
Anyone know of a good cooler? -
A few suggestions:

Not sure if they are the "best", but they got good reviews. -
Check out the CoolerMaster Notepal W1, looks great but unfortunately, there isnt any review I am aware of

Yeup I second DrunkMunky's suggestion. I put up a thread about this Cooler Master widescreen notebook cooler a few months ago before it was released.
It was released in November finally, and I think I'm going to go pick one up.
There aren't any reviews for it yet, but the thing is it is the same cooler as their normal sized coolers, just wider and with an extra fan, 3 instead of 2.
I've read reviews about their normal sized coolers and they cool better than the Vantec ones because the aluminum disperses heat better than the plastic Vantecs.
Things is the Vantec coolers don't suck, they cool laptops really well, it's just that the Cooler Master cooled to lower temperatures.
The Vantec coolers received more points for features though. Also because the Cooler Master cooler fans had a tendency to be nudged out of position and well they're pretty big and not portable enough to carry around.
The Vantec coolers on the other hand were portable enough to put into a large laptop bag or knapsack.
Hope this helps guys.
Cheers,

The Titan Serina laptop cooler is awesome. I've tried many coolers for my DTR Inspiron 9100 and the titan had the best results.
check it out: http://www.insanetek.com/review.php?id=93&page=2
It brought down my cpu temps by 6-8 degrees. It's meant for 15.4" laptops, but 17" laptops will fit no problem. -
I agree with the Coolermaster Notepal pick. I've got the smaller version of the W1 under my laptop right now, and it does a great job of knocking a few degrees off of the idle temperatures. When running at 800MHz (which I usually do when I'm just browsing the Internet), the laptop's own fan doesn't even need to turn on most of the time. Probably the biggest effect for me is the hard drive; putting my laptop on the Notepal makes the hard drive run 10 degrees cooler.

I didn't know these things existed until the other day I saw one in Fry's. I've got an HP ze5270 at home that sounds like a 747 preparing for takeoff within 5 minutes of bootup. Will one of these coolers actually keep the fan from turning on?

The cooler will not stop the fan from coming on. But it will limit how high the fans speeds are.
I have this cooler for my I9300:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16834999336
It is great. Keeps laptop at a good typing angle and gets the vents away from the table for better cooling. Lowered temps about 6-10C under heavy load, which is awesome.
My I9300 hangs about an inch off each side, but is still really stable. Also leaves the vents on the bottom open since there is nothing to block it. -
i've been using antec notebook cooler for 4 months. it's really doing a great job.
however, i'm not sure if it will also work effectively in 17" because mine is 15.4".
check this review of this product:

From what I have read I think that one is a little unstable and not as good for 17in laptops. Due to the fans being where they are. But that is a nice cooler if you are using a 15.4.

Am using the Spire Pacific Breeze, around $15.
Heres a picture of it under my Sager 9750...
You can get it here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16834996501
Lift up the back end for better typing. Small, 2 speed setting, cool blue LEDs, extremely stable even for a behemoth like my 9750 and well worth it for $15. -

I actually just picked one of these up.....it is awesome. First off...the fans blow UP into the vents, rather than suck out air. Secondly, it's aluminum...i swear, it NEVER even gets warm, even with my E1705 sittin on it for a few hours. It also puts the lappy at an angle which makes gaming/typing much more comfortable.....AND, it's not flat....it has a concave shape that gives the hot air room to escape....very nice cooler. The back of the notebook does hang a little off of the back and the sides....but the E1705 is a beast of a machine, so you have to expect that.....but it's not unstable on it or anything, I've experienced no rocking or wobblyness.

The W1 on the Cooler Master website shows 3 fans.
I haven't actually seen them posted in online stores.
Maybe it's an error on their part OR they aren't releasing that one or something of that sort.
Cheers,
Mike -
Pardon my ignorance, but what are the benefits of using a cooler??
I never used one with my Pavilion ZD700 (which gets quite warm) or my old Vaio... however, this could explain my frequent use of extended warranties.
Anyway, just bought a 710M, which is supposed to run fairly cool. Is this something I should consider investing in??
If it matters, I largely stick to Word & internet... Occasional city building games, but nothing to intensive.
Thanks! -
It's just some extra security for your laptop that's not required.
Just another thing to make your mobile computing more pleasant.
It cools your laptop down.

Thanks! Appreciate the input.

I use a Targus Chill Mat right now. It's OK I guess, doesn't do a huge amount for my laptop. I just bought an Inland Serina notebook cooling pad - it's not what I expected. Looks great, feels awesome, but doesn't do a lot for cooling. Targus actually does a slightly 1-2* better job.
So, I'm back in the market.

Where would you suggest I get one? My notebook is an Acer 5672WLMi. Can I get it from newegg?

Well, I packaged up the Serina, going to ship that back tomorrow.
I'm going to give this one a go from Newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16834996501
You can find a bunch of other coolers there:

@ChazMan421 - Cali must be referring to the Coolermaster Notepal W1. It's the only aluminum cooler.
-
Is there something like this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835192014
With more of an angle? As in, I won't be using the keyboard on it kind of angle. -
I got the aluminum Coolermaster for my 15.4" Compaq notebook. It was gorgeous, although more of a desk accessory, not really light enough to be easily portable... and it didn't do a thing as far as cooling. I think the fans - which are at the top of the unit - were in the wrong place for the way my laptop is built. Sadly, it went right back to Amazon.
I just unpacked the Vantec 3 I ordered from Zipzoomfly for about $16 shipped, and it's cooling brilliantly. I don't have the temp stats but the area below my wrists is positively cool to the touch, and without a cooler it was quite warm. The Vantec has two fans in the center, and blows air out of the top.
I was almost hoping the Vantec wouldn't work out so I could have an excuse to order the Serina, because it's so beautiful. But it actually seems to be doing the job very well, and it's quite small and portable too, so I guess I'm all set for now. -

the 3 fan version of the cooler master is r9-nbc-awbk, in black and r9-nbc-awbs in silver. does any1 know how to get them
-
ok i found a site that has it, http://www.alienrock.com/nocode.html , $110s pretty steep tho. especially when competing coolers can be had for around $20. that thing is pretty sexy tho, if it really performs better than any other cooler id take the dive.
-
ruk, I do, but they are on back order. I just went out and bought the 2 fan model. It does an o. k. job at cooling my m5700. I also just ordered the Spire since all I want is some air flow to cool everything and the Spire delivers.
-
I bought a cooler (Bytecc NC-500) from www.topmicrousa.com for a little under $24 including FedEx shipping. My notebook will overhang it by about 1" on each side but that doesnt bother me as it will still be stable and will be out of the way a little more. My notebook won't be in for another week so I will have to wait to see how well it cools.

I want to ask why I should need a cooler for my Notebook? Pls can anybody explain?
-
I really wouldnt classify it as a 'need' though, if you are happy with your temps as they are I wouldn't get one. -
In regard to notebook coolers, i use a Duplo Big Blocs (taken from my kids) and prop up the back.
i have the voodoo envy u709 and i looked at all the coolers and i find that none ahs the fan position where the intakes are located... it seems that it might do more to just raise the bottom of it.
i really looked at and liked the Spire but i notice that one of the fan intakes on the back, actually intakes the air coming out of the exhaust...
the wedge designs are better for the wrist... unless you use a separate keyboard/ mouse
i may take up on the (Bytecc NC-500) and take it to a drill press to put holes where i need it...
my 2 top choice sofar is the Bytecc NC-500 and the Cooler Master, now that it comes in Black... -

heh. the TITAN Sernia looks good, there always low profile company with good products though :S..
Also, i think you guys should also try Arctic Silver 5 Ceramanique* or whatever...its applied onto the CPU,GPU,Chipsets, and it helps cool. Maybe 6-10C, i have it on my desktop pc.and tons of people do too.
-
kulzer, tell us how good the bytecc is once your new laptop arrives so i can hurry up and purchase if it is as good as it seems

I've tried many coolers for my Dell XPS 1st generation. The ONLY one I have found effective so far is the Titan Serina cooler. Its made of aluminium, which conducts a good chunk of the heat even if the fans are not on. It has three fans and an optional USB hub and a card reader.
I noticed a drop of about 7-10C in my notebook with that beautiful cooler. Check it out: http://www.driverheaven.net/reviews/Titan Serina/index.htm -
Were did u buy from? hello.
-
www.newegg.com has the sernia, bytecc, and antec
-
Are there any more opinions on this? I have read some reviews that say the Coolermaster isn't big enough to totally support a 17" Laptop, that when it open the laptop tend to almost tip over?
I'm still looking for a nice sturdy portable cooler for a 17" Dell e1705. Any updates on some of your purchases? -
Looking for more opinions on this topic.
-
i bought the vantec cuz of the extra usb ports and it does a really good job cooling.
-
does any one know where the fans are on the xps m170 and whether most cool pads have the fans placed in the same place?
-
There are several choices...
2 versions of the Lapcool2
1 version of the Lapcool3
2 versions of the Lapcool4 -

One tip for a notebook cooler:
ALWAYS BUY A COOLER THAT SUCKS THE AIR IN STEAD OF BLOWING IT. I tell you it is a better cooling solution. It makes the internal fan work too, so it keeps the laptop cold inside.
Charlie-Peru -
wouldn't it really depend on the way the vents go?
Best notebook cooler out there? for widescreen notebooks
