Klispch is known to create some of the best sound for value with PC technology...the Klispch Promedia Ultra 2.0 Personal Audio Speaker System, would do you very well :)

Creative also produces some very good high end audio with their 7.1 surround sound systems rivaling and even beating Klispch (tho note they usually cost more too). that said, their Gigaworks T40 or T20 systems are well respected.

the Logitech Audiohub has decent enough reviews, but I find that most of them base that on the extra connectivity that it provides rather then the sound quality, which all say is acceptable, but lacking.

I would also recommend you check out to see if Edifier has anything of interest, as they also produce some excellent audio equipment for a very fair price!

If portable is, what you're looking for I recommend Insignia NS-NBSPK.
I got a set only because it was less than $10 on eBay. After trying I got rid off two Sony sets. (SRS-T100PC and SRS-M30)
No external power or batteries to worry about(USB powered)
They are only 0.8W x2, but seems like double of SRS-T100PC which is 1W x2.
Sound is crisp and base is not bad. Best o all they are small and come in a zipped storage bag.

those would work...I actually got a pair of 20w (2x10w) Logitech's that are powered via a USB port, but they sound about as bad as my laptop speakers. if you want some audio quality, I would still recommend one of the 3 options I mentioned above.

I use Klipsch for my home theater they do make some of the best if not the best speakers for pc's. I am just not familiar with any portable laptop speakers from them.

well, like anything portable or mobile, you make compromises. they lack power on the lower end, but that's not a surprise, being it's 2.0 stereo, not 2.1 stereo. I believe the Creative are better on the heavier end...but if you keep in mind the compromise you're making, you probably won't be disappointed by either the Creative or Klipsch options, should you go with them.

My idea of "portable" is something which you can put in your pocket. Of the various units I have tried which meet that criteria, the JBL On Tour provides the best audio quality. However, it is quite heavy for its size, the location of the ports under the sliding cover is annoying and it has a non-standard power connector.

The Creative Travel sound series are not quite as good for audio quality but are much better than the internal speakers of most notebooks. The power connector is the same as on some external 2.5" HDDs and other devices so you might well have a cable which lets you power he speakers from a USB port.

I guess, when it comes to understanding the OP's request, it would have been good for them to specify what they think portable is. in the case of a laptop, it would have to be something that's 2.0. best option really is a high quality headphone, but if they wish to share the sound, they'll need something better. the question that comes from that is do they want quality or just something louder then the laptops integrated speaker. *shrugs*

the creatives or the klipsh's are the best options in terms of volume an sound quality. But there are other options that will be more portable, at a lack of sound quality.

meh, overpriced for what you get, but the review says they're pretty decent.

Altec Lansing is usually pretty good, but I think creative or Klipsh is the way to go.
