Well my 10 year old speakers finally decided to burn out so i am looking for some speakers to replace them.
I'm looking to spend around $50 but im willing to spend some over if you can convince me its worth it.
I'll also be going to college in the fall so space is at a bit of a premium.

Logitech Z313's seems pretty good. You are going to want something 2.1 channel if you listen to an bass at all, makes a huge difference.

If you don't need a sub then I'll say the Creative Inspire T10's. Very good sound for $50 not much of a foot print. Really like these so I'm saving to move up to the Creative Gigaworks T20's.

If you're going to buy speakers every 10 years then you need to spend a bit more than 50 bucks for them. Frankly, anything under $100 with the word speaker in it gives me a sudden impairment of neurological functions--but that's only because I'm an audiophile--so you will pardon me if I have trouble thinking in this category.
If you want a decent pair of laptop speakers, a sub $200 range would be a better price point. For an acceptable bass boost, in that category sub-300 should do the trick. -
This thing is small, has good volume and decent sound quality (better than any sub-50$ system you'll ever find..) and runs straight off your USB port. 31$ shipped.

Don't listen to the people who are telling you to spend $200, $300 on speakers. You can perfectly acceptable sound from a $50 set of speakers. I would go for a 2.1 system at least though. Having the dedicated sub does wonders.
The Logitech Z313 look nice (or the Z323 for something newer). I have a friend with the older Logitech X-240s and they sound nice for a sub $50 set.
I'd also recommend you consider buying used. My current speakers is a set of Klipsch Promedia 2.1s that I got used (a year old) for $50 and they are truly amazing. Speakers last a long time, and they usually take awhile to warm up anyways.

hp.com actually has all their logitech speakers on sale right now and the Z-313 and Z-323 are cheap, too.

On the other hand, if you prefer a bit more quality then you'll likewise need to spend a bit more money. Truth be told, I use my speakers for more than just knowing which song is playing (and I already stated in my post, I am an audiophile) so he was forewarned that my opinion was more critical than that of someone from the masses.
If you care anything about sound then the below company is a good place to start. And as already mentioned, Logitech is also recommended. Just don't start at the bottom.

Creative P380,
Best speaker set i've ever owned for budget, wonderful sound quality, and a very good subwoofer.
Think i've had these for like 6 years, and there still running like day 1.
Best speakers ~$50?
