Hey guys I plan to record/video a lecture on my laptop. Are high end webcam enough for recording/videotaping a lecture? If not what are some of the best tools to record/video a lecture without lugging a tripod or have crazy wire setups. I probably think this question doesnt go into this section of the forum.

I happen to work for a tech company that does online lecture delivery. And my job entails capturing a lot of training sessions delivered as lectures & PowerPoint format. So I have plenty of experience in this area.
The best option is if the school itself has some kind of lecture capture, like Blackboard Collaborate or Echo 360. That way, the software captures the native PowerPoint / Whiteboard, audio, and text chat for any student questions.
If your school doesn't offer that, and it's just a plain "analog" lecture, then you're going to capture that lecture as a video recording from your laptop.
The webcam on your laptop won't do it. Onboard laptop webcams are designed for video chats, and are usually low image quality. You'll need a decent webcam that can record high resolution. Something like a Logitech C920.
The other problem is audio. Your laptop mic isn't high enough quality, and will capture a lot of echo. You want a directional mic as close to the lecturer as possible. I'd recommend something inexpensive like a Blue Yeti USB microphone, set in cardiod mode, pointed at the lecturer, as close as you can get it.
You should sit in the front row of the class (to get the best video and audio). You should get a USB extender, so that your Blue Yeti USB mic can be placed on the lecture table. And you should ask the lecturer before class for permission to put the mic on the table, because you want to record. Most lecturers will be fine with that.
Good luck. Hit me up with any other questions you might have after this.

Pretty much, yes. Going any better than a Logitech C920 and you're going into full-fledged cameras.
Best tool to record/video a lecture.
