I think I may be getting carpal tunnel or something - my new mouse is giving me a severe cramp in my pinky and ring finger after working on a video project all day.

Any suggestions for a great wristpad or mousepad with some sort of cushion? (or perhaps a more ergonomic mouse?)

Well what mouse are you currently using? Do you use a standard mouse pad right now?

I use a magic mouse with my Mac Pro or my wife's MBP, but most of the time I am on my desktop or Envy and I use a targus wireless optical mouse. It has these ridges on the sides to help grip and at first it felt pretty great, but lately it's feeling too small for my hand perhaps? my pinky and index finger are pressed on top of each other to grip the right side of the mouse.

i have a few standard mousepads. they don't really seem to help. I think I need to elevate my wrist a little.

Sounds more like a mouse problem to me. :p Personally I think you will find a full size mouse much more comfortable. You should head to a local bestbuy or the like to try out mouses. Thats probably the best option unless you are looking for something specific.

I think this is a full sized mouse. it seems about the same size as everyone else's mouse. and it's called "Comfort Laser Mouse" ;-)

Well you said "targus wireless optical mouse" so I went by that. :p

I use a 3M precise mouse pad with gel wrist rest myself. The actually mouse surface doesn't play too well with telflon feets, so I just put a cloth mouse pad over that.

Thanks very much! looks huge but somehow I think it would feel better than the "comfort" mouse I'm using!

Thanks Johnny, that gel wrist rest on the 3m looks comfy - and pretty inexpensive. what kind of mouse do you use?

I use a Razer Deathadder, the shape is actually designed by Microsoft, fairly big mouse I'd say. I bought it for comfort more than anything.

The DeathAdder is another excellent choice for comfort.

As a general rule, when it comes to ergonomics, bigger = better. Your hand can be too cramped on a small mouse, but it's highly unlikely to be too spread out on a large one. :)
