My HP Envy 15 arrives tomorrow, AND I'd like to buy the biggest best monitor for gaming (at least 27-28 inches). What would you recommend? I'd love to get a 30" 2560x1600 monitor, but it looks like the Envy 15 maxes out at 1600x1200 for an external display???? I thought HDMI 1.3 went higher ... please help, this isn't something I've had success solving through blog trawling ... thanks!

Bear in mind that in order to drive such a monitor at native res for best gaming image quality, the GPU may not have enough grunt to drive a 27+" monitor natively.

30-inch monitors also have slower response time, and possibly higher input lag. Basically very good for displaying lots of information on the screen, but not so hot at gaming.

I'd personally suggest a 27" 1920x1200 monitor. The onboard GPU on the Envy is fairly potent for a laptop, but on the other hand it's not exactly state-of-the-gaming-art. While Crysis etc at 1920 will be impossible, most less demanding titles should run at native res provided you throttle back some detail - and the large size is more immersive than a 24" 1920 x 1200 screen.

I game (not on a laptop - don't see why I need to tie both hands behind my back) on 2707wfp monitors from Dell.

it was kinda hard to find, you just need look as they made this really obscure on their webpage. :)

I agree with Vogelbung. If you don't have the graphics card for it, gaming on 2560x1600 isn't going to be a very pleasant experience. I find a 27" monitor set back slightly farther back on your desk to be ideal if you're targeting the 1920x1200 resolution. I also have a Dell 2707WFP and it's a nice balance of everything I wanted in a monitor, though there are numerous options out there depending on what you need your monitor to have or do.

    Also, budget needed.

imo, the sweet spot is 22-24", anything bigger and you'll will need a large view distance (like snakecharmed) and the area. my desk is approximately 5-6ft long, place a >24" on it just looks plain odd...and i dont wanna deal with the gpu factor as stated (my gtx 260m just manages 1080p on modern games like MW2..), you'll need some sli/crossfire desktop gpu to pull that resolution while gaming. dual 5970 anyone? lol

i tried using my mates 30inch lg tv as an experiment, and i had to physically look around the screen. then i tried a 22 and a 24 inch samsung and they were much better. all 3 were tvs and not monitors, but the 30 was far too much. the 24 was my favourite.

yea, in my case tho its a 23" since that is 1080p while 24" = 1200p. i like 1080p since it fits my laptop's resolution perfectly. if i had a 1200p, i would love a dell u series IPS 1200p monitor!!! i got a decent ASUS VH236H...i needa get a job (im only 16 tho and born in australia lol) to pay for big expenses like cars etc.

I have a 30" dell and an envy 15. You will need a dual DVI slot to power most 30" monitors, which the envy 15 doesn't have. Just make sure you get a monitor that has a hdmi input, and you are all set.

I play a lot of RTSes, so I have stuck with my 22" screen for that reason. Going any bigger will force the HUD outside of my peripheral vision.

If you want ~30" go get a 32" LCD TV that is 1080p if gaming is your primary concern. The extra resolution of a 30" is nice but your card may struggle with it depending on the games you play.

Also all the 30"s you can get (that is with a HDMI 1.3 input) has input lag issues.

30" screens are like the biggest waste of money ive ever seen besides macs lol. either get a 32" LCD tv, dual 22-24" screens or maybe a 25.5" single screen at most. 30" ones cost like >1400USD and have the input lag as mentioned above.

If you're gaming, certainly. And as I said, which is why I stick with the 27's. If you're working, then it's a major advantage - but that's outside the scope of this thread. However I note the OP has apparently downgraded in the meanwhile to a Macbook Pro - although one wonders why two failures would lead someone to make a radical switch in all manner of ways straight away - so even a 1920 monitor is kind of dicey for any halfway serious gaming at native res I would imagine.

Not true at all. Dell 3007WFP-HC is often $800 from Dell. HP LP3065 is $1300 on Newegg. Neither of them has input lag issues. It only happens that the ones with HDMI 1.3 does. Also you cannot compare a 2560x1600 to 1920x1080...for anything other than gaming it is a HUGE difference.

well maybe if u can snag that kinda deal, imo just get a 32" samsung 1080p LCD TV, games struggle at that high resolution unless ur rocking high-end GTX desktop SLI or 5870/5970 GPUs.

ppl are different tho, what i hate mite be what you love lol. funny thing, it was only a few years ago i saw a 24" and i was WOWed by the size of that thing. now ppl are going to 27 and even 30"...lol ive gotten accustomed to my 15.6" laptop screen more than my ASUS 23" screen.

If I can game at 1920 x 1200 with a Mobility Radeon HD 3650, then I'm sure he can manage 2560 x 1600. Just not very well.
