Which is better, in terms of response time and power usage/battery life, etc? I have a laptop with 3 USB ports, so I won't mind plugging a USB adapter for the wireless.
Also, I plan to use the mouse for some occasional gaming, so I need a good/decent mouse, but not necessarily amazing one with 1000Hz polling etc.

RF. Bluetooth mice are a hassle IMO. Plus RF seems to have much better latency than BT.

get Logitech Marathon/M705 if the size fits you,
good mouse with 3 years of battery life (claimed) :D
it's the successor of VX Revo, so for occassional gaming it's good enough

And if you want the King, wait for/get G700

I recently ordered a bluetooth mouse. I haven't received it yet but I have a hard time believing bluetooth's latency is noticeable by a human perspective. I have a regular 2.4 GHz RF mouse now and I can say that the people who prefer corded mice are just limiting themselves; the latency is so small I don't think it could ever make a difference to a human.

Bluetooth latency is 14ms, which is pretty high even by wireless mouse standards. You won't tangibly notice it in everyday browsing, but if you play games with it, you'll definitely feel the lag. I love my Orochi's Bluetooth for normal stuff, but I always plug it in for gaming.

OP's clearly planning to use the mouse for daily wireless mouse,
so Orochi is out of the league. sleep-freeze after 3 seconds idle can make people crazy

crayonyes: Right, it's mainly for daily use. Marathon/M705 seems pretty good. I'll look into it. Thanks.
Poryhack: I will be glad to hear about whether there is a difference or not, once it arrives.
Anybody have slow startup or lag with bluetooth mice? or is that not really noticeable? I hear that could be an issue.

I never experience lag issue with bluetooth mice, the only issue is the little freeze each time the mouse wake-up from sleep
RF mice are so much better in that area compared to bluetooth

Just got my mouse today (MS Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000). I have only used it for about 10 mins but I am not noticing any difference compared to my RF mouse in regular use. I have noticed the minor delay on "wakeup", but I wouldn't say this hampers use or even that it's annoying.

Bluetooth all the way if you have a BT radio embedded into the laptop.

No dongle to lose. BT mice are cheap (I picked one up for my mom the other day for $14 shipped). And no using up your USB ports.

may I ask what's the timeout threshold on your MS bluetooth 5000 ?
(how much time it needed since idle to go to sleep)

A long enough timeout threshold won't bother you, but imagine a freeze every 2-3 seconds of idle (a particular bluetooth mouse) lol

All I can say, is that they must have more patience than me, as I have that mouse and it drives me up the wall. Matter of fact, I've stopped using it here lately. Between the wakeup time, reconnect time, and occasional drop of sync... UGH.

I haven't pinpointed it exactly but it seems to be more than 3 and less than 15 seconds.

If you're willing to tinker this seems like the kind of thing that could be changed somehow by the user to me. Maybe even keep it always on, at the expense of battery life? Just a complete hunch on my part but i will probably go google it now.

Having used both the BT MS 8000 and the RF based MS mice, I highly prefer the RF models. There are noticeable lags and jumps with the BT dongles, handshake not being exactly perfect either.

Dongles are tiny, and mount right into the mouse for storage and travel. I'd take the RF model.

it's not user changeable. it's hardcoded in the mouse firmware.
so only manufacturer can change it.

If manufacturer can make the program for users to change the sleep-timeout setting, it would be fantastic!
