    Greetings everyone!

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get the mic in the above mentioned headphones to work? I plug it in, and windows doesn't recognize any new microphone... I did the same test with my work computer and it works fine... I'd be pretty surprised if my cheapo dell work computer supports the 3 channel 3.5mm headphones and my super awesome gaming laptop doesn't... does anyone have any ideas? Here is a list of that I've done so far...

    - Plugged them into each of the audio jacks, none work, and none show as a microphone once they've been plugged in.
    - Removed the current drivers and let windows install the ones it though would be best for the audio card.
    - Tried another pair of 3 channel 3.5mm headphones (didn't work either)...

Any/all ideas/thoughts are welcome! (yeah yeah, I know... get a gaming headset...) <3

It is more an exception that a computer supports 3.5mm combo headset plugs so that the Dell supports it is just luck. Even if it supported headsets it could have supported one of the other existing "standards"* which would make the microphone non-functional.

Your computer doesn't support headsets so no driver updates and such will help, however it is possible to make an adaptor that will give you one headphone plug and one microphone plug. Easy to make if one can solder but there are some ready made ones that should work (no guarantee), e.g:
Amazon.com: Headset Buddy Adapter: Smartphone Headset to PC Adapter - Use a 3.5mm iPhone/Smartphone Headset With Your PC, Converts 3.5mm Plug to Dual Mic/Audio 3.5mm, for Skype/VOIP (01-PH35-PC35): Computers & Accessories

(* the good thing about standards are that there are so many to choose between ;)

    Hi,

Sorry for hijacking your thread - but does anyone know if the Lenovo ThinkPad W520 has a 3.5mm combo plug? Ie, will the Bose AE2i work in both microphone and headphone mode at the same time?

    Thanks in advance!

After a quick googling... it looks like yes, it has a "combo plug"... As mentioned above there are different standards, so hopefully it will fit the basic 3 channel 3.5mm plug with mic. Here is a link to read a little.
