Bose vs. Altec vs. Logitech vs. Klipisch

Hello,

I'm looking for a 2.1 speaker setup for my dell 1520. Initially I was going to go for the altec lansing VS4121 for the price and decent sound. Then I found I could get a refurbished Logitec z-2300 for under $100 cdn, but I'll probably be living in a college apt/house with 5 or so other people and the bass on those might be too much. I know there's a big following with the Klipishch (how do you spell that) 2.1 thx system for its solid sound and cheap price. But then my bud bought a bose ipod dock, and the sound was stellar, and bose is high end shiet.

So I'm kind of leaning toward the bose companion 3 series II, but is it really worth the extra cash flow for them? The companion 5 is sweet, but that's way too much cash...and the comp 3 is the most I would spend.

I mainly will be using it for music (rock, hiphop, house), gaming, and movies.

In comparison which would you spend your dollars on?

Bose Companion 3 Series II - $299 (Bestbuy)
Logitech Z-2300 - $130 (refurb $80 - ebay)
Altec Lansing VS4121 - $99 (Bestbuy)
Klipisch Pro Media 2.1 THX - Under $100 (ebay or somewhere)

 

Without much research I would say that the Klipsch would be the best bet... especially at a nice price like you are quoting. Logitechs are nice though too... ive got the Z-5500s

 

The Klipsch offers the best price/performance ratio.

 

z-2300s are great, dont regret buying them at all, and when I bought it they were definitely cheaper then the Klipsch.

The Logitechs are really nice. I have the Z-5550s myself. You could always turn the bass down. The Klipsch speakers aren't worth the extra jump in price. The Bose sound great, but are also waaay overpriced.

 

I'd say Bose when it comes to speakers, they are a very reputable company, with an impressive history. You'll have to pay a little premium, but you do get that Authentic Bose feel and sound.

 

Altec Lansing is too cheap for the outstanding quality. I bought a 2.1 set for my computer. I paid 230€ for them. I was so excited about the quality (way better than BOSE or Logitech) and the good value for money. The next week I decided to buy another pair.... to my surprise, the same costed 69€... i couldnt believe it... apparently, the first set i bought had wrong price tag

Believe me, Altec is too good and extremelylylyly cheap.

 

Go to the store and try them out. The sucky part is that Bose does not allow you to sample music at the store like all the other speakers, so it's not a direct comparison. Makes you say hmmm...

 

$300 is a lot for 2.1 computer speakers (speaking of Bose here). If you are going to spend that much, you should just get the Logitech Z-5500's which are THX certified 5.1 surround speakers.

 

In the world of audio, Bose is considered a four letter word. Generally good construction, but that "Bose Sound" bears very little resemblence to high fidelity sound. Incredibly overpriced and overhyped.

Everything else you listed will provide better audio performance at far lower prices.

Bose, ipod and Harley Davidson. Inferior products at inflated prices and hyped all to heck. And living on the hype and the "fanboy" appeal.

If you want REAL speakers, get the klipsch. Logitech makes a good product as well.

 

I've heard good things about Logitech speakers.

Don't get Bose as others above have said, they are way overpriced pieces of crap. Any audiophile would probably refuse to even listen to them. But then they wouldn't use Logitech either, but that isn't the point.

 

The sound of the Klipsch blows the rest away. I demo'd them all extensively, liked the Klipsch (almost a home stereo!!!) and enjoyed the hell out've them for nearly a year ... then the volume pot with the on/off clicker died. Not very durable components. I have a pair of Sony powered speakers that came with a 5 year old-plus Vaio desktop that are still running strong.

 

my logitech has been playing strong running strong for 4 years going on 5. I've blasted these more than a few times and they still sound fine. They've been traveling between the school dorm and home for 4 years also! I keep hearing Klipsch is better now. Back then though, Logitech was not only way cheaper but better in sound quality. So I am glad they have come around.

 

Antic lansing is cheap overpriced retial level stuff.

Bose is overhyped and over priced and sell things mostly on there name.

Logitec has some good stuff, but I consider Klipsch a good one or two steps up from that with some very good stuff.

My last set of speakers was Logitec, my current set is Klipsch (theater speakers, not pc speakers but there pc level stuff is outstanding aswell, if you dont mind the price I recomend the pro-media ultra's I have heard them in person and was very close to buying)

 

I know this is gonna sound stupid but it depends on the environment you will be using the speakers (unless your going to be in an acustically perfect environment :s). The diffrence is how speakers sound from one place to another is quite astounding. But anyways for the money the Logitech's or Klipsch are the way to go. But which sounds better will depends on the room your in & your personal prefrences on what sounds good.

 

so looks like nobody is feelin the bose companion 3...and in all honesty I can understand why. When I listened to them in the store I was not completely blown away by them. They sounded nice, and no distortion at full blast...but for
$300...yeesh. Really stylish though design though. However the companion 5's definately were another story...really blew me away...but again $500. I think not.


So its probably down to the Logitech z-2300 vs. Klipsch pro media. Both are THX cert. 200watt systems. Which ones would produce the best sound for movies, music and gaming.

 

ive only had experiences with Bose and Logitech. both i like, but i am very interested to see what Klipsch has to offer. ill have to look em up. definitely looking to get a 5.1 system in a few months.

 

Klipsch 2.1 are hard to find now however they are the best 2.1 speaker system for under $200. Awesome sound. I considered getting a pair however I got a new closed headphone (AudioTechnica ATH-A900) to use with my current Sennheisers. I cant turn up the music too loud in a dorm anyway.

well for gaming...i was playing call of duty 2 and a grenade went off and the RSO came up and asked who the hell had a gun. haha

music...it's good...not the best...but definitely better than my roommates logitechs he asks me so often to turn my speakers down and they're only at 1/4 volume.

movies...it really depends what kind of movie you watch. but it passes my tests

 

Oooh a fellow AudioTechnica owner, how do you like the A900s? I have the A700's wich are just below them (they are supposed to sound nearly identical so I took the price cut and went and got a pair of A700's and AD700's)

 

another issue i would have to consider is that i'll be living with roomates, either in a dorm/apartment/house (still looking). I'm sure during daytime, evening they won't mind the blasting sound vibes comin from my room but at night, it gotta be hush hush.

What do you think of the bose companion 2 series ii? Its a 2.0 speaker set for $119 cdn. I was actually impressed with the sound at the demo booth, and I'm sure it would sound better in a room environment.

 

Bose is more than just speakers; they are statements of luxury that I'd only get for show-rooms.

I chose the Klipsch Ultra 2.0's over Bose Companion 2 Series II (same price when I looked) because of an extra input and control. I heard things I never did before and overall, I'm impressed. The bass in the back is more than enough for me; you can feel it in your heart and lungs.
I also listened to the store demos and at that level of quality, you'd have to scrutinize a clip several times to distinguish between the speakers. The difference might come down to aesthetic preference.
